LOS ANGELES - The Talladega College track and field teams headed west for a pair of meets over the weekend in and around Los Angeles, California, and the Tornadoes continued to build momentum as the season begins to turn for home.
The Tornadoes saw another athlete post a qualifying mark for the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and two more record setting times were posted in relays.
The week began at the California State University - LA Invitational where
Nastario Williams posted his second best time of the season in the 100-meter dash. Williams' time of 10.39 seconds was achieved when winds were within the legal limits, and therefore it was eligible to qualify him for the NAIA Championships - which it did with an "A" standard.
The relay teams also shined at CSU-LA. The Men's 4x100-meter relay squad took another victory in their event, as they posted a time of 41.05 seconds, and the women's 4x100-meter quartet finished in a school record time of 49.02 seconds.
The weekend concluded with a trip to the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State University. There, the men's 4x100-meter relay team continued to impress. This time, it was the men's 4x100-meter team who posted a school record time in the event. The Tornadoes turned in the eighth-fastest time in the NAIA this season, and set a new school record, with a mark of 40.85 seconds.
Entering the 2023 Southern States Athletic Conference Championships, which will be contested on Friday and Saturday April 21-22, the Tornadoes now have four automatic qualifiers for the NAIA Championships. Williams has reached the "A" standard in both the 100 and 200-meter races,
Emmanuel Niang is locked in for the 110-meter hurdles, and the 4x100-meter team is guaranteed a place in the Championships as well.
Christian Louis (200-meter dash) and the men's 4x400-meter relay team are also qualified provisionally, having reached "B" standards in their events.
