Talladega College men's soccer enters the 2026 season with renewed focus, experienced leadership and a determination to turn last year's disappointment into motivation.
Although the Tornadoes advanced to the conference semifinals during the 2025 season, the program believes its overall performance did not reflect the talent or expectations surrounding the team.
"2025 is a season we wish to forget on the field," the Talladega coaching staff said. "Although we made it to a conference semifinal spot, we believe that throughout the whole season we underperformed."
While the Tornadoes were disappointed with their results on the field, the program experienced tremendous success in the classroom. That academic performance continued to reinforce the program's commitment to developing student-athletes who represent Talladega College at a high level both athletically and academically.
Senior Leaders Return with Something to Prove
Talladega will lean heavily on the experience and leadership of seniors Christopher Syms and Jalen Smeins as the Tornadoes begin their 2026 campaign.
Syms has established himself as one of the team's leaders over the past two seasons. As he enters his final semester, he is determined to finish his Talladega career on a high note while helping guide the program toward its championship goals.
Smeins also returns for his senior season as one of the Tornadoes' proven performers. After a 2025 campaign that did not meet his personal expectations, Smeins enters the new year motivated to make amends and deliver the type of performances he knows he is capable of producing.
Their experience will be important for a Talladega team that enters the season with high expectations.
Experienced Newcomers Strengthen the Roster
The Tornadoes have also added two experienced newcomers in Sizwe Mpofu and Ravaughn Hyman.
Mpofu joins Talladega after competing at Life University, while Hyman arrives following experience at Oakland City University. Both bring leadership, maturity and experience competing at a high level.
Their additions give Talladega valuable experience as the Tornadoes look to strengthen the roster and compete for championships.
National-Level Expectations Remain
Despite the disappointment surrounding the 2025 season, Talladega's ambitions have not changed.
"As always, our ambition is to perform at a national level," the coaching staff said. "We expect to always play attractive and entertaining soccer."
For Talladega, the challenge in 2026 will be turning that attractive style of play into greater consistency and results.
The Tornadoes enter the season motivated by what they believe was left unfinished a year ago. With senior leadership, experienced newcomers and a renewed commitment to performing at the program's expected level, Talladega will look to establish itself as a conference championship contender and a program capable of competing on the national stage.
Expanded Coaching Staff Provides Additional Leadership
Talladega Soccer will also benefit from an expanded coaching staff in 2026.
After more than 20 years of coaching at multiple levels and four years at Talladega College, the program's veteran leadership will have additional support this season.
Natalie Need, a former Talladega player, returns to the program as a head coach, bringing familiarity with the program and a player's perspective to the coaching staff.
The staff will also be assisted by graduate assistant Tyrike Andrews and student assistant Malachi Daniel, providing additional support in the daily development and preparation of Talladega's student-athletes.
The expanded staff gives the program additional resources as Talladega continues working toward its goals on the field, in the classroom and beyond.
Developing Future Global Leaders
Talladega Soccer's philosophy extends beyond wins and losses.
"Talladega College gives me a small part in helping guide future global leaders," the coach said. "We, Talladega Soccer, believe the world is a village, and it takes every part of that village, small or large, to raise the child."
That philosophy remains central to a program that places value on academic achievement, personal growth and athletic excellence.
As the 2026 season begins, the Talladega men are ready for a fresh opportunity.
The goal is clear: learn from 2025, compete at a championship level and once again make Talladega College a program to watch both within the conference and nationally.
