Dega Women’s Volleyball Announces 2023 Schedule

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team readies for action under the first year of new head coach LaShaunda Spurgeon's tenure with the announcement of the 2023 schedule.

This year's schedule consists of opponents from both the NAIA and NCAA Division II levels as the Tornadoes have applied to transition from NAIA to join the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) at the NCAA Division II level.

Three key members, Zyaire Prettie Garrit, Nedu Evans, and Kenya Glenn, return from last year's 13-17 squad, who look to improve from the previous season.

The 2023 campaign starts on Aug. 19 against Reindhart University in Waleska, Georgia, at 11 a.m. CST. Last year, the Eagles posted a 19-13 record, including a 16-4 mark against Appalachian Athletic Conference competition.

After an exhibition against NCAA Division III power Birmingham-Southern College, Spurgeon takes Dega to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to face her alma mater and in-state foe Stillman College. The road tour continues to start September with the Lane College Tournament in Jackson, Tennessee. Dillard University and Winston Salem State University are the Sept. 1 opponents, while Harris-Stowe State University and hosts Lane College highlight the Sept. 2 action.

The Tornadoes host Rust College for the first home match of the Spurgeon era in the Dr. Billy C Hawkins Student Activity Center on Sept. 5 and get their first taste of new life in the SIAC on Sept. 7 against Miles College.

Talladega's schedule gets SIAC-heavy in October as the team will face a future conference opponent on six out of seven dates starting on the road in Savannah (Ga.) State University on Oct. 2. The only non-SIAC matchup is against Oakwood University on Oct. 17 in Huntsville, Alabama.

The season concludes with Tuskegee University coming to town on Oct. 27 and Albany State making the trip to Talladega on Nov. 3.

Talladega College named Spurgeon as the men's and women's volleyball head coach on Feb. 9. Spurgeon, who previously served as head women's volleyball coach at Dillard University, has nine impactful years of coaching and recruiting experience at the NCAA and NAIA levels. She was named Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) Coach of the Year in Spring 2021 and boasts a career record of 81-55 and an overall record of 59-20 at Dillard University. Prior to her coaching career, Spurgeon was a two-sport standout in the SIAC, posting the top service ace numbers in NCAA DII in 2011 and 2012.
