Box Score GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Entering the final match of the regular season off a 3-1 win over Pensacola Christian (Fla.) on October 19, the Talladega College men's soccer team's postseason hopes were still alive, but the Tornadoes needed to get a result against the Georgetown College (Ky.) Tigers. The Tornadoes were in the match throughout, but a late free kick sank the 'Dega hopes.
Georgetown (6-9) cashed in with the game-winning tally in the 76th minute, as they took a narrow 2-1 win over Talladega (5-4-1) at Toyota Stadium in Georgetown, Kentucky.
'Dega registered four of the first six shots in the match, but they struggled to keep the ball on frame, and in the 25th minute, Georgetown's Logan Anderson opened the scoring. Anderson cashed in a feed from Esteban Betancurt Cardona that beat 'Dega goalkeeper
Leonard Richardson and gave the Tigers the early 1-0 lead. Over the next 10 minutes, the Tornadoes had pair of chances that went for naught, but Richardson also made a key save in the 40th minute that kept the deficit as a single goal headed into the locker room at the intermission.
In the second half, 'Dega ratcheted up the pressure, and in the 75th minute, the Tornadoes were reqarded. 'Dega drew a foul in the box, and that set up a penalty kick opportunity for
Tyrike Andrews, which he buried for his second goal of the season, and the Tornadoes found themselves level with an opportunity to steal a road win.
That chance quickly disappeared though. Just more than a minute later, it was the Tigers who earned a direct free kick, and Luca Perrin netted his third goal of the season on the opportunity to restore the Tigers' one goal lead. As the minuted dwindled, the Tornadoes tried to find another equalizer, but their only two shots in the final 15 minutes did not find their way on goal, and the Tornadoes saw their season ended in a 2-1 loss.
The loss officially eliminated the Tornadoes from any opportunity to advance to the Continental Athletic Conference postseason tournament.
"In closing out our regular season, I'm grateful and thankful for these kids and for the way they represented themselves and Talladega College," head coach
Junior Noel said after the match. "From where we were last year and the complete and positive turnaround, I heap all the praise on the kids I serve. No one would have dreamed that at this point that any of the teams would be in post-season contention and to go down to the last game of the season with both teams in the conversation is remarkable, indeed. Both teams faced tremendous adversity throughout the season (lost of parents, critical illness, and serious injury, to name a few), but they never gave up and kept getting better for it."
Noel continued, "I give thanks to our team's leadership. Team captains
Tyrike Andrews and Temesyn Tezera both bought in to what we're trying to build here at Talladega College as early as the Spring semester, so my job was easy in getting the rest of the group on board. We were led in the offense by our talisman,
Tavar Lawrence, with 15 goals. He has been simply tremendous. Defensively, our team captain and leader in minutes played,
Tyrike Andrews has been solid throughout the season. He kept the ship sailing and, with his leadership, kept it steady whenever we found ourselves in the rough. Special mention must be given to Ivroy "Sam" Smith who stepped up to the plate when our starter
Leonard Richardson had to leave the team for personal reasons."
