Tornadoes Sweep Second Day of Dragon Classic

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Talldega College volleyball team kept the pedal to the metal today with consecutive sweeps on the second day of Lane College Dragon Classic in the J. F. Lane Gymnasium. The tornadoes defeated both the Tougaloo College Bulldogs and the Rust College
Bearcats in straight sets.

   
The Tornadoes (3-1) started the second day as dominately as the first with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-13) sweep over Tougaloo.
 
Josephine Gates and Tianah Sanders both put in a solid effort on the attack as Gates posted seven kills to lead the team and Sanders finished right behind her with six kills. Maloree Calzadillas passed eight assists while Raven Clater helped to keep the offense moving with five
assists as well.
 
Nedu Evans and Kenya Glenn both finished with seven digs and Calzadillas added six digs to help the reception percentage. Gates led the front row with two solo blocks and two block assists.
 
As a team, Talladega posted a .197 attack percentage and tallied 11 service aces. Bailey Jones amassed 10 kills to lead Tougaloo while Tatyeanna Armstrong passed 21 assists in the contest for the Bulldogs.

In the second contest of the day, the Tornadoes battled to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-23) over a competitive Rust squad. The Bearcats made Talladega work in the third set to clinch the victory as the final game featured 12 ties and five lead changes.

Evans was electric for the Tornadoes attack with 15 kills on a .344 attack percentage to lead the squad. Gates and Sanders added six kills each while Clater passed 14 assists.

The team attack was even more potentent in the second match as Talldega amassed a .277 attack percentage, passed 28 assits and totaled 11 services aces.

Defensively, Glenn and Clater both posted double digit digs with 10 each to lead the squad. Gates finished with two block assists.

Jasmine Coleman totaled nine kills to lead the Rust attack while Jelisa Alexander passed 23 assists.
 
Next up for the Tornadoes (3-1) is the HBCU Inviatational hosted by Edward Waters University on September 3 in Jacksonville, Florida. Talladega is currently set to take on Fort Valley State University at 8 a.m CDT. followed by Benedict College at noon. The tournament concludes the
following day with a match against Tuskegee University at 8 a.m.
