Baseball Defends HBCUAC Title with Win Over SUNO

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – No. 1 Talladega College baseball team claimed its second straight HBCACU Baseball Championship title with an 8-3 win over No. 6 Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) this afternoon from Dickey-Stephens Park, home of the Arkansas Travelers, the Double-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

The Tornadoes, who set the record for most wins yesterday, are now 42-12 on the season, while SUNO is 24-25.

Talladega got on the board in the bottom of the third when a pick-off attempt error by the pitcher allowed Victor Rivera to score to make it 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth with one out, Armando Jackson singled to left and was then lifted for pinch runner Jeriel Lamboy. Jederick Velazquez drew a walk to keep the inning going and sent Lamboy to second. Both runners moved into scoring position when Jonathan Williams grounded out to short for the second out of the inning. Lamboy and Velazquez later scored off of Joshua Catala Santos' two-run single through the right side to make it 3-0. He later scored when Rivera singled to left to push the lead to 4-0 before the inning ended.

SUNO cut the lead to three when an RBI single made it 4-1 before a double play ball ended the threat in the top of the fifth.

The Tornadoes got the run back in the sixth and added three more in the seventh to go up 8-1.

SUNO threatened in the top of the ninth when it loaded the bases with two outs and was able to push a pair of runs across to make it 8-3 before a fly out to right ended the game and give Talladega its 14th straight victory of the season.

Talladega starting pitcher Daniel Jose picked up the win, throwing a complete game to improve to 5-2 on the year. He allowed three runs on eight hits, while striking out six.

Catala Santos led the team in RBIs with three, while going 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

Teammates Rivera and Jackson each tallied three hits. Jackson added a pair of RBIs and the team's only double.

Lamboy led the team in runs scored with three.

Talladega will now wait for the NAIA Selection Show on Wednesday, May 7 at 4 p.m. to find out where it will be sent for the 2025 NAIA Opening Round.
