LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. –
Miguel Oropeza's three-hit day sets a career record for his 300
th hit, while guiding No. 4 Talladega College to a 13-2 run-rule victory over No. 5 Saint Xavier University (Ill.) this afternoon in the NAIA Opening Round of the Lawrenceville Regional.
The Tornadoes are now 43-12 on the season, while the Cougars drop to 31-23.
Oropeza finished the contest going 3-for-4 with a home run, a pair of singles, four RBIs, and a run scored.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Tornadoes got on the board in the bottom of the third, and it started when
Joshua Catala Santos was hit by a pitch and then stole second.
Victor Rivera walked to put runners on first and second. Both runners then moved into scoring position after executing a double steal. Oropeza, who tallied a hit in his first at-bat, recorded his second hit of the contest with a three-run home run to put Talladega up 3-0.
Diego Duque kept the inning going when he singled through the left side before being lifted for pinch runner
Jahir Cruz. Cruz later stole second and took third on a flyout. He later scored off
Darlin Fernandez's RBI double to left to make it 4-0.
Armando Jackson kept the train going when he reached first on an error by the pitcher that allowed Fernandez to score and push the lead to 5-0 while Jackson moved to second on the play. Jackson later scored off an error by the catcher to make it 6-0, which allowed
Jeriel Lamboy to make it to second before the inning ended.
Talladega added two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and two in the sixth to go up 13-0.
Saint Xavier got on the board in the top of the seventh and a pair of back-to-back home runs to make it a 13-2 game.
Starter Duque picked up the win to improve to 11-2 on the season. He allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings of work, while striking out seven in the process.
Fernandez finished the game going 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a double, while Jackson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and a home run.
Talladega will play again tonight at 7 p.m. against No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett College in the winner's bracket.
