MARSHALL, Texas - The Talladega College baseball team swept a doubleheader over Wiley University Friday. The Tornadoes improved their overall record to 20-7, and 14-0 in HBCUAC play. Talladega tries for the series sweep Saturday at Noon.
Game 1: Talladega 9, Wiley 7–7 Innings
The Tornadoes had to do it in comeback fashion in the first game of Friday's doubleheader. The Wildcats took a 5-0 lead through two innings, starting with a two-run home run by Wiley's number three batter Jacob Perez. The Wildcats cleared the fence again in the second inning. Jhan Carlos Javier's solo shot extended Wiley's lead to 3-0. The Wildcats added one more on a throwing error on a pick-off attempt and another on an Amir Mason RBI double.
Talladega scratched one back in the top of the third inning on a
Miguel Oropeza sacrifice fly. The Tornadoes' bats then caught fire in the fourth inning. Talladega put up a 5 spot to take a 6-5 lead. Sebastian Pizzaro and
Victor Rivera swatted bases loaded singles that scored one run each. Oropeza then added a two-RBI base hit with the bases still loaded to tie the score. Talladega took the lead when Rivera scored on a ground ball double play.
The Wildcats tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Perez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Tornadoes then went ahead for good in the fifth inning.
Armando Jackson singled home a run and Talladega added two more via RBI ground outs, taking a 9-6 lead and eventually winning 9-7.
Oropeza led the way offensively in game one with three runs batted in.
Christian Delgado earned the win, improving his record to 4-0 on the season. Delgado pitched 3.1 innings of one run ball in relief for Talladega.
Game 2: Talladega 14, Wiley 9–7 Innings
There was no comeback necessary in the second game of the twin bill. Talladega jumped out to a 12-0 lead through four and a half innings of the seven-frame contest. Oropeza started the party with a two-run home run in the first inning. The Tornadoes' first baseman also contributed an RBI single in the second inning, giving Oropeza 3 RBI which matched his game one total.
Jackson supplied more power for Talladega. The catcher powered two over the fence, a solo shot in the third inning and a two-run home run in the fourth. It was the junior's first career multi-home run game and the 14th and 15th of his career. Jackson also had a run-scoring single in the fifth inning.
Wiley clawed back half of its deficit in the bottom of the fifth. Ivan Del Villar's grand slam and Kai Woodard's two-run home run made it a 12-6 game after five innings.
The Tornadoes extended their advantage in the sixth. Pinch hitter
Darlin Fernandez hit his first home run of the year to make it 13-6. Rivera then tripled in one more to put Talladega on top 14-6. The Tornadoes went on to win 14-9.
Jackson's two home run and four RBI led the way offensively for Talladega. Tornadoes' starter
Diego Duque earned the victory, lasting 4.2 innings and boosting his season record to 2-2.
