Baseball Advances in Black College World Series With Win Over Wiley

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 1 Talladega College baseball team finally got underway at the 2024 Black College World Series following a two-and-a-half-hour rain delay. The Tornadoes defeated No. 4 Wiley College 8-0 today to open up the tournament. With the win, Talladega is now 37-15 while fell to 29-20 on the season.

Talladega jumped on the board early when it plated three runs on three hits and two Wiley errors in the bottom of the first. It all started when Victor Rivera singled through the right side and then stole second. He later moved to third off of Darlin Fernandez's single to center. Fernandez moved up 90 feet when he stole second to move into scoring position. With no outs and two runners in scoring position, Rivera was able to score off Miguel Oropeza's sac-fly to right to make it, 1-0. Fernandez took third on the play.

Nomar Garcia kept the inning going when he was plunked, which allowed him to take first. He later then stole second, but a throwing error by the catcher permitted Fernandez to score to make it 2-0 and second Garcia to third.  With one out and a man on third, Jaylen Mateo walked and then stole second, but a second throwing error by the catcher allowed Garcia to score. Garcia's run pushed the score to 3-0 before the frame ended.

The Tornadoes added a pair of runs in the third, a run in the fourth, fifth, and seventh to push their lead to 8-0 going into the eighth inning.

The Talladega bullpen allowed five base runners over the span of six innings while striking out six.

Starting pitcher Samuel Guadamuz picked up his 11th win of the season as he allowed one hit while fanning three in three innings of work.

Jeriel Lamboy led Talladega at the plate with three hits going 3-for-4 with an RBI, two triples, and a stolen base. Teammate Oropeza finished with a team-high two RBIs while going 1-for-3.
Rivera finished the game going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of stolen bases.

Talladega is back in action tomorrow when it faces Bluefield State University. First pitch is set for 9 a.m. CT.
