TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College baseball team rallied late to take game three of the series 6-5 against Campbellsville University this afternoon at home. The Tornadoes won the series 2-1 while improving to 12-10 on the season. The Tigers fell to 11-7 on the year.
Trailing 4-0 after three and a half innings of play, Talladega cut the lead in half when it posted two runs on one hit to make it a 4-2 game in the bottom of the fourth.
The Tigers added a fifth run in the top of the sixth to go up 5-2, but a late seventh-inning rally by Talladega started with one out when
Darlin Fernandez hit a solo home run to make it a two-run game.
Miguel Oropeza followed that up with a single to short and later went to second when
Nomar Garcia singled to center. An error by the Tigers' pitcher moved both runners into scoring position before Garcia was lifted for pinch runner
Jeriel Lamboy.
Isaac Guzman loaded the bases when he drew a walk. Oropeza later scored to make it 5-4 when
Rafael Diaz walked to keep the bases loaded.
Still, with one down in the seventh, the Tigers went to their bullpen but the new reliever was met with a two-run double into right-center to give the Tornadoes its first lead of the game off the bat of
Allen Morel that scored both Lamboy and Guzman.
Campbellsville threatened in the top of the ninth with bases loaded but weren't able to score as a fielder's choice and a strikeout ended the threat.
Starter
Nomar Caraballo gave up three runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work for Talladega. Reliever
Helson Fernandez picked up the winning as he went five innings allowing just two hits and a pair of runs.
Jack Wood earned the save as he recorded the final two outs of the game for the Tornadoes.
Talladega is back home tomorrow at 1 p.m. when it hosts the University of Tennessee Southern.
