Baseball Wins at Columbus State, 10-3

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The offense plated ten runs as the Talladega College baseball team picked up a 10-3 win this afternoon on the road against Columbus State. The Tornadoes are now 2-6 while the Cougars are dropped to 3-5.

Victor Rivera got things started in the top of the first when he drew a four-pitch walk and later moved to second when Darlin Fernandez was hit by a pitch that put him on first.  Talladega loaded the bases when Miguel Oropeza was plunked.  The Tornadoes took a 2-0 when Rivera and Fernandez scored off of Isaac Guzman's double to right field, which sent Oropeza to third on the play. Armando Jackson got in on the action with an RBI single to score Oropeza to make it 3-0 and send Guzman to third to put runners on the corners. Guzman later scored off a double play ball to make it 4-0 before the inning ended on a flyout.

The Cougars threatened in the bottom of the first but left a pair of runners standard.

Talladega tacked on two runs in the second and third while adding a run in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead.

Columbus State added a run in the bottom of the fourth off a pair of hits and a batter hit by a pitch.

After each team posted a scoreless fifth, the Cougars added a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it, 9-2.

The Tornadoes got one of the two runs back in a wild top of the seventh to push the lead to, 10-2.

CSU was able to find a third run in the bottom half of the eighth but that was all they ended up getting for the rest of the game as Talladega picked up the win.

Rivera, Oropeza, Jackson, and Eddie Velazquez each finished the day with two hits each. Rivera reached bases a total of five times as he finished with a team-high three walks.

Both Guzman and Jackson combined for four RBIs and two runs scored. Guzman recorded the team's only extra-base hit with a double.

Starting pitcher Jose Franco picked up his first win of the season. He scattered four hits over 5.1 innings of action while allowing two runs and striking out four.

Talladega starts a three-game series when it hosts Lindsey Wilson College for a doubleheader on Thursday and the final game taking place on Friday. The first pitch on Thursday for game one is slated for 11:30 AM.
