SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Talladega College women's indoor track and field team opened their 2024 Indoor season at the University of the South Invitational. The Tornadoes entered the meet as one of 17 teams in attendance at the meet, and they grabbed a sixth-place finish, missing the podium by only 12 points.
The Tornadoes scored 35 points, highlighted by a pair of second place finishes. 'Dega also set set four program records in the meet, and two other individuals set personal bests in the event.
Dhenecia Pinnock got her sophomore season off to a great start in the 400-meter dash. She earned eight points with a second place finish with a time of 1:04.23, and teammates
Amia Montgomery (6th place; 1:07.79) and
Wayonna Brooks-Wells (8th place; 1:10.22) also scored points in the event for the Tornadoes. The women's 4x400-meter relay team also placed second, with Pinnock,
Lamoy Duffus, Montgomery, and Jewel Cross posting a program record time of 4:21.77.
Cross set the women's program record in the mile with a time of 6:19.50, and Duffus set program bests in both long jump (4.95m) and triple jump (10.18m). Brooks-Wells set a personal best in the 400-meter dash, and Dajanae Shaw posted her best ever time in the 800-meter run (2:47.77).
Dhaenia Pinnock placed sixth in the 55-meter dash (7.55) and scored three points,
Dhaenia Pinnock (5th place; 28.07) and Duffus (7th place; 28.73) scored for the Tornadoes in the 200-meter dash, and Duffus placed third in both the long jump and triple jump to score in each event.
NCAA Division II Tennessee Tech University won the meet with 135 points, and NCAA Division III Berry College (Ga.) placed second with 100 points. Brenau University (Ga.) posted 47 points, Clayton State University (Ga.) recorded 40 points, and Tennessee Wesleyan University rounded out the top-5 with 39 points.
The Tornadoes will take next weekend off and then be back in action on February 9-10 at the Samford University Open.
