BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southern States Athletic Conference indoor track and field championships were contested on Monday at the Birmingham Metro CrossPlex, and the Talladega College teams took part in the championships where the men finished fifth, and the women in a tie for sixth, respectively.
The Talladega men scored 48 points in the Championship, highlighted by five podium finishes including one individual title, while the women finished with five points in the event.
Emmanuel Niang continued his outstanding indoor campaign as he won the individual title in the men's 60-meter hurdles. He posted a winning time of 8.05 seconds, and he won the event by nearly a half-second as he tallied the Tornadoes' best finish of the day. The time was the second best of the season for Niang, who is one of two Talladega athletes currently locked into the NAIA Indoor Championship field.
Freshman
Christian Louis also snared a pair of podium finishes. He posted a second place time of 22.41 seconds in the 200-meter dash, and he crossed the line in third in the 60-meter dash with a mark of 6.95 seconds.
Jonathan Meadows was third in the 400-meter dash (50.47), and The Tornadoes' 4x400-meter relay team - which consisted of Meadows, Niang, AnthonyGentles, and
Shawn Henry II - finished second to grab the last Talladega Podium finish of the day. Talladega also scored in the 4x800-meter relay (4th, 5 points), while Meadows andÂ
Laterrica Woods, Jr. scored fifth and eighth place finishes in the 200-meter dash and the 600-meter run, respectively, to round out the scoring for Talladega.
The women's scoring performances came from
Amia Montgomery - who was 7th in the 60-meter hurdles (11.38; 2 pts) - and the 4x800-meter relay team (6th, 3 pts).
The Tornadoes will have one more chance for athletes to qualify for the NAIA Indoor National Championship field. Talladega will participate in the Samford University Bulldog Open on Saturday, February 11, again at the Birmingham Metro CrossPlex.
