Dega Puts Away BPC to Open SSAC Tourney, 6-4

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Showing a winning resilience they have carried throughout the season, the Talladega College baseball team rallied to defeat the Brewton-Parker College Barons in the opening contest of the 2023 SSAC Baseball Championship Tournament. The Tornadoes grabbed a 6-4 comeback victory.

Brewton-Parker (16-34) jumped ahead 3-0 in the top of the first when Kennard Dawson placed an infield single, which helped Jack Morris and Kyran Coleman score. Brandon Lawrence reached on an error by Jose Santiago, and Dawson crossed home from third to cap the solid start for the Barons.

Santiago made up for his error in the second inning and smashed a two-run homer to score himself and Nomar Garcia. Wander Arias followed with a single to right field to plate Darlin Fernandez and tied the contest at 3-3.

Dega (28-16-1) pushed ahead in the third inning with a Garcia RBI single to right-center, which brought in Rafael Diaz. Then in the sixth, Armando Jackson connected on a double to left field for two RBIs, with Miguel Oropeza and Fernandez touching home and extending the lead to 6-3.

The Barons made the game interesting in the ninth and loaded the bases. Lawrence drew a walk to let Morris score, but Brewton-Parker's rally stopped there, and Talladega collected a 6-4 victory to move to the winner's bracket.

Jackson and Santiago finished the day 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while Fernandez turned in a remarkable performance on the base paths with four steals.

Jose Franco (7-3) pitched six innings in the win, struck out seven batters, and surrendered two earned runs. Ramses Ortega went three innings in relief, posted a strikeout, and walked three batters.

Next up for Talladega College is a meeting with the third-seeded Mobile Rams at 4 p.m. at Milton Wheeler Field. Mobile defeated Faulkner 4-2 to advance to the winner's bracket in the double-elimination tournament.
