Dega Drops SSAC Tourney Game to Mobile

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Talladega College baseball team trailed early for the second day in a row, but this time the Tornadoes could not climb back in a 7-5 loss to the University of Mobile Rams Thursday evening in the Southern States Athletic Conference Baseball Championship.

The loss does not spell the end of Dega's run in the double-elimination tournament (28-17-1). Instead, the team will have to battle through the loser's bracket in hopes of winning a conference title.

Mobile (33-12) jumped ahead in the bottom of the second with a two-RBI single from Sean Mason. Trey Watson smashed an RBI single to left field, and Mason capped the big inning when he scored on a balk to push the lead to 3-0.

The Rams added a run in the fifth with an RBI single to left-center by Samuel Plash. Then in the sixth, Tucker Musgrove drove a hit to centerfield for an RBI, while Sam Bowman crossed home on a Talladega error in the seventh to move the score to a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Tornadoes put the rally caps on in the ninth, starting with a single to right-center by Jahir Cruz to drive in Jaquan Nieves. Darlin Fernandez followed with a grand slam to plate Cruz, Issac Guzman, and Jose Santiago. However, the rally ended there, and Dega fell 7-5 to take the team's first loss of the 2023 tournament.

Santiago finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, and Fernandez went 2-for-5 with a run scored and four RBIs thanks to the late home run.

Helson Fernandez (2-2) took the loss after pitching five innings in the start with three strikeouts and four earned runs. Michael Gonzalez went three innings in relief a struck out a batter.

Talladega College looks to avoid elimination at Milton Wheeler Field tomorrow with a matchup against Faulkner University at 9 a.m. in the first game of the day.
