Tornadoes Finish Sweep of Stillman in 16-6 Win

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College baseball team put a definitive conclusion on the Southern States Athletic Conference series with Stillman College Saturday afternoon. The Tornadoes defeated the Tigers 16-6 to sweep the weekend.

Both teams battled fiercely throughout the regular season finale, but it was the Tigers (15-30, 1-20 SSAC) who struck first when Mason Collins smacked an RBI double to left field, and Kobe Lewis followed with a single to second base to plate Raymon Vaughn as Stillman took a 2-0 in the top of the first.

Talladega (27-16-1, 17-6 SSAC) responded in back-to-back innings, starting in the bottom of the first, where Wander Arias knocked a sacrifice fly to right field and allowed Darlin Fernandez to tag from third base. In the second inning, Issac Guzman registered an RBI and reached safely on a fielder's choice by Griff Minor as Nomar Garcia crossed home to tie the contest at 2-2.

Collins hit another RBI double, this time to right field in the top of the third, and Lewis followed up with a double to left field for an RBI to give Stillman a 4-2 advantage.

After Allen Morel's single to right field in the bottom of the third, Miguel Oropeza scored on a fielding error by Bilal Whittle. Jesuette Dominguez then pulled a sacrifice fly to left field, which scored Joelvin Dilone and tied the ball game at 4-4.

The back-and-forth continued into the fourth when Stillman went up 5-4 after Devin Kelly connected on a triple to right field. Dega retied the game in the fifth off an RBI single to left field by Dominguez to score Jose Santiago. The Tigers came right back in the top of the sixth and took a 6-5 lead when Sieas Elliot drew a bases-loaded walk to allow Whittle to trot in from third.

Talladega took control in the sixth after a single to left field by Arias led to a Whittle fielding error as Fernandez scored from third. Another Stillman error, this time by Lewis, after a single from Armando Jackson, allowed Oropeza and Arias to cross home plate. Garcia kept the rally going with a double to right center field, which let Jackson come in for a run. Juan Carlos Terrero put a cap on the massive inning with a two-run homer to left field, with he and Garcia scoring to push the lead to 11-6 after a six-run half-inning.

The Tornadoes continued the onslaught in the seventh after a throwing error by Thomas Stovall allowed Oropeza to score, and Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which allowed Santiago to tag a score from third base. Then in the eighth, Guzman blasted a solo home run to left field, and Arias smashed a two-run homer to left and plated Jahir Cruz to push the lead to the decisive 16-6 tally.

Arias finished as the batting leader for Dega thanks to a 3-for-5 effort at the plate with three RBIs, two runs scored, and a home run. The designated hitter was one of six Tornadoes who posted at least two RBIs.
Michael Gonzalez (5-3) earned the win in relief and threw three innings with a strikeout while allowing three walks and a hit. Jack Wood lasted four innings in the start and posted three strikeouts with five earned runs and eight hits allowed. Oliver Cruz worked an inning, struck out a batter, and surrendered three hits and an earned run.

Talladega College now prepares for the 2023 SSAC Baseball Championship hosted by William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, May 3-6, with opponents and game schedules released later.
