Dega Sweeps DH over Stillman

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College baseball team started slow but caught fire on the way to a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep over the Stillman College Tigers Friday evening. The Tornadoes rallied to win the first contest 6-5 and cruised to a 20-2 win in the second matchup.
 
GAME 1 – Talladega 6, Stillman 5 (7 innings)
 
Neither team scored in the first two innings, but Stillman (15-29, 1-22 SSAC) came to life at the plate in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Kobe Lewis highlighted the big inning with a two-RBI single down the left-field line by Kobe Lewis and a single to left field by Tre'en Dorsett to score Sieas Elliot.
 
Dega (26-16-1, 16-6 SSAC) started the series-opening comeback in the bottom of the third when Armando Jackson singled up the middle for two RBIs as Joelvin Dilone and Jahir Cruz crossed home plate to cut the lead to 5-2.
 
The Tornadoes chipped away at the lead with two more runs in the fourth after Rafael Diaz singled through the right side for an RBI as Jose Santiago scored. Miguel Oropeza later touched home and moved the tally to 5-4 after an error from Stillman's Elliot while trying to throw out Diaz, who was stealing second.
 
Heady baserunning continued to come in clutch for Talladega. In the fifth, Darlin Fernandez scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, and Jaquan Nieves stole home in the sixth to give the Tornadoes the decisive 6-5 lead.
 
Jackson finished as the batting leader with a 1-for-3 effort and two RBIs. The Tornadoes were a terror on the base paths as Cruz and Nieves posted two steals, while Fernandez and Diaz stole a bag each.
 
Michael Gonzalez (4-3) pitched two innings in relief to earn the win with three strikeouts while allowing two hits and a walk. Helson Fernandez threw five innings in the start, posted four strikeouts, and surrendered seven hits, five runs, and two walks.
 
GAME 2 – Talladega 20, Stillman 2 (7 innings)
 
After a scoreless first inning, Dega erupted for nine runs in the second, starting with a double to left field by Darlin Fernandez to score Cruz. Issac Guzman followed with a score on a wild pitch. Wander Arias single through the left side as Fernandez crossed home to move the score to 3-0.
 
Oropeza drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring in Arias, and Diaz drew a bases-loaded walk on the following at-bat to bring in Nieves. In his second appearance of the inning, Cruz smashed a single to third base for an RBI to plate Santiago. Guzman capped the dominant half-inning with a triple to left field to bring in Cruz, Diaz, and Santiago to give Talladega a 9-0 advantage.
 
Griff Minor made sure the Tigers avoided a shutout with a single back to the pitcher as Bilal Whittle scored to move the tally to 9-1.
 
Dega resumed the onslaught in the third with an RBI single by Diaz through the right side to plate Nieves. In the fourth, Arias notched another RBI with a single down the left-field line and brought in Cruz. Jackson secured an RBI after a groundout to Geoff Grier as Guzman touched home, and Santiago followed with a two-run homer with Arias aboard. Diaz finished the five-run inning with a single to right field as Oropeza scored to move the score to 16-1.
 
Stillman added another run in the fifth with a double down the right-field line by Grier as Devin Kelly came in to move the margin to 16-2.
 
The Tornadoes added to the lead when Fernandez posted a sacrifice fly to right field for an RBI as Guzman tagged from third in the bottom of the fifth, and Jesuette Dominguez blasted a three-run homer, which also plated Nieves and Yahil Figueroa to push the lead to the final 20-2 total.
 
Jose Franco (6-3) worked five innings and struck out five Tigers while allowing five hits and two earned runs. Winston Garcia pitched two innings in relief with three strikeouts and only a single hit allowed.
 
Talladega College and Stillman conclude the SSAC series tomorrow with a single-game set for a 2 p.m. start.
