Dega Offense Explodes in DH Sweep over Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. – The Talladega College baseball team took Friday night personally and responded to the shutout with 23 total runs in a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep Saturday over the University of Mobile Rams. The Tornadoes captured the first contest 13-10 and the second one 10-6 to win the road series at Jacobs Field.

GAME ONE – Talladega 13, Mobile 10

In a game fun, if a fan loves offense but is terrible for pitching coaches, Dega (24-16-1, 14-6 SSAC) struck first with a single up the middle by Jose Santiago to drive in Andres Puello.

The Rams (29-11, 14-7 SSAC) responded with two in the second as Trevor Wells scored, and Tucker Musgrove smashed an RBI single through the left side to give Mobile a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless third, Joelvin Dilone recorded an RBI single through the left side as Rafael Diaz came in to score and tie the matchup at 2-2.

Mobile reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Sean Mason, and both Musgrove and Landon Moore scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 5-2.

Then in the fifth, Nomar Garcia singled to left field to plate Diaz, followed by an RBI single up the middle to bring in Garcia to cut the lead to 5-4.

The Rams pushed the lead to 7-4 after Moore scored on a wild pitch, and Samuel Plash hit an RBI single up the middle in the sixth.

Dega responded in the seventh inning when Winston Garcia and Jaquan Nieves scored on an error by Sean Mason during Jahir Cruz's at-bat. Dilone followed with a sacrifice bunt to bring in Cruz to tie the game at 7-7.

Both teams' bats fell quiet until the explosive and decisive 12th inning. Nieves scored on another error by Mason during Darlin Fernandez's appearance. Wander Arias hit an RBI double to right center to knock in Fernandez. Armando Jackson smashed a double to center field as Arias touched home, Cruz followed up with a single through the left side to plate Santiago, Juan Carlos Terrero scored on a wild pitch, and Dilone capped the whirlwind inning with a sacrifice fly to drive home Nomar Garcia as Talladega took a 13-7 lead.

Mobile attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the inning and scored three runs, capped by an RBI single by Musgrove to bring the score to the final tally of 13-10 and a win for the Tornadoes.

Dilone posted four RBIs and stole two bases during a 2-for-5 performance at the plate. Cruz finished 4-for-5 with four stolen bases, two walks, a run, and an RBI.

Ramses Ortega (4-1) pitched seven innings in relief and notched six strikeouts, three hits, three walks, and two earned runs. Samuel Guadamez went four innings in his start, and Juan Peña worked the final inning.

GAME TWO – Talladega 10, Mobile 6

Fernandez blasted a solo homer to left-center field in the first to open the scoring in the day's second contest to give Dega an early 1-0 advantage.

Mobile posted two runs in the bottom of the first with RBIs by Andrews and Wells to take a 2-1 lead.

The back-and-forth continued in the top of the second when Diaz and Cruz scored on separate wild pitches to reclaim the lead at 3-2.

Not to be outdone, the Rams responded in the bottom of the second when Thomas James scored on a wild pitch, and Musgrove singled to left center, which put Mobile up 4-3.

Jackson facilitated the final lead change of the day with a three-run homer to left field and brought in Arias and Fernandez to put Dega up 6-4, and Nomar Garcia hit a two-run shot to left field with Diaz on base to push the lead to 8-4.

Mobile added a run each in the third and fourth to cut the lead to 8-6, but the Tornadoes put the game away with an RBI from Diaz to plate Santiago and an RBI single from Cruz to bring in Winston Garcia to reach the 10-6 final.

Cruz added to his stolen base total with two more in the second matchup to tie for the team lead at 13 for the season.

Helson Fernandez (2-1) went 5.2 innings with four strikeouts alongside six walks, five hits allowed, and an earned run. Jack Wood pitched 1.1 innings in his start.

Talladega College steps out of conference play one last time Tuesday to face Reinhardt University in Waleska, Georgia, starting at 4 p.m.
