Big Inning Lifts Knights over Dega

COCHRAN, Ga. – The Middle Georgia State University Knights scored five runs in the second inning, which provided enough cushion to defeat the Talladega College baseball team Friday evening in Southern States Athletic Conference action at Stuckey Field.

MGA (21-18, 8-8 SSAC) used two big at-bats by Jaiden Duarte and Jacob Pierce to gain the advantage in the second. Duarte blasted a two-run homer to drive in himself alongside Jacob Edwards. As the lineup turned over, Pierce smashed a three-run home run to bring in JT Rice and Datren Bray to give the Knights a 5-0 lead.

Talladega (21-13-1, 11-4 SSAC) scored a run in the fourth when Jose Santiago doubled to centerfield for an RBI when Darlin Fernandez touched home.

Unfortunately, the bats were mostly quiet for the Tornadoes until the ninth inning. Armando Jackson hit an RBI single to center as Winston Garcia scored while serving as a pinch runner for Nomar Garcia. The lone run was all the offense Dega could muster as the Tornadoes fell 5-2 to open the road series.

Jose Franco (5-2) took the loss on the mound with eight strikeouts, eight hits surrendered, and five earned runs allowed in six innings of action. Jack Wood pitched two innings of relief and gave up three hits.

Hunter Varnadoe (5-4) pitched 6.1 innings in the win for Middle Georgia and struck out 10 batters with three hits and one earned run allowed. Caleb Lanoux threw the final 2.2 innings and allowed two hits and a run in the non-save appearance.

Talladega College and Middle Georgia meet in an SSAC doubleheader tomorrow, with the first pitch set for noon.
