Dega Splits High Scoring DH with MGA

COCHRAN, Ga. – It was a great day for scoring at Stuckey Field, as both teams scored a plethora of runs. Ultimately, the Talladega College baseball team split the Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader with the Middle Georgia State University Knights. Dega won the first game 17-11, while MGA won the second matchup 10-6 to earn the split for the day and win the overall series.

GAME 1 – Talladega 17, Middle Georgia 11

After feeling a constricted offense yesterday, game one was a complete reversal of the series' first game. The Tornadoes (22-13-1, 12-5 SSAC) posted five runs in the first, starting with Jose Santiago drawing a bases-loaded walk for an RBI as Darlin Fernandez came in from third. Miguel Oropeza followed with a two-RBI single to left field, which plated Joelvin Dilone and Wander Arias. Rafael Diaz smacked a single to right field for an RBI and brought in Santiago. Issac Guzman capped the big inning with an RBI courtesy of a sacrifice fly to right field as Oropeza touched home to put Dega up 5-0.

Undaunted, the Knights (22-19, 9-9 SSAC) cut the deficit slightly when JT Rice scored on a wild pitch, and Garrett Dennis captured an RBI double to left field to bring the score to 5-2.

Dega pushed ahead even more, starting in the second with an RBI single by Santiago to center field to drive in Fernandez. Oropeza followed in a single to left field as Santiago scored. Then in the third, Fernandez smashed a two-run homer to bring in Jahir Cruz and move the tally to 9-2.

MGA responded with a monster bottom of the third with eight runs scored, capped by a three-run homer by Datren Bray and a solo home run from Rice to give the Knights a 10-9 lead. Rice pushed the lead to 11-9 with a solo home run in the fifth.

The Tornadoes put the game away sixth when Fernandez scored as Armando Jackson reached first base for an RBI on a fielder's choice. Diaz punched a two-RBI single to center field for Dilone and Arias to score and reclaim the lead at 12-11. Guzman extended the lead with an RBI ground out as Santiago crossed home. Fernandez put the game on ice with a grand slam to drive in Cruz, Garcia and Santiago to push the lead to the 17-11 final.

Fernandez turned in a stellar effort at the plate and went 5-for-5 with six RBIs, five runs scored, two homers, and a stolen base.

Ramses Ortega (3-1) earned the victory with seven strikeouts while allowing six hits, two walks, and an earned run in 4.2 innings of work. Juan Peña threw two innings in his start, and Jack Wood recorded an out.

GAME 2 – Middle Georgia 10, Talladega 6

The Knights struck first with an RBI single by Jaiden Duarte to drive in Ryan Wilson in the bottom of the first.

Garcia grounded out, but his at-bat served as an RBI as Santiago scored from third to tie the game at 1-1 in the second.

However, Wilson reached first on an error, and his efforts on the base path allowed Bray and Adam Alicea-Brooks to score and reclaim the lead. Dennis added a solo home run in the third to extend the Knights' lead to 4-1.

In the fourth, Santiago homered with no one else on base to cut the lead to 4-2. However, Wilson added two more RBIs with a homer to drive in Bray and himself to push to a 6-2 advantage.

Dega began to chip away at the lead starting in the fifth when Arias hit an RBI double to drive in Cruz. Then in the sixth, Guzman received credit for an RBI on a fielder's choice as Diaz scored on an error by JT Rice to cut the lead to 6-4.

Middle Georgia pushed the lead further in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer by Jacob Pierce and a solo home run by Wilson. Bray smashed an RBI double in the seventh to move to a 10-4 advantage.

The Tornadoes refused to go quietly and started a rally with a two-RBI double by Arias to plate Fernandez and Cruz. However, the comeback attempt fell short as Dega dropped the series finale 10-6.

Samuel Guadamez pitched four innings and struck out four batters while surrendering six hits, four earned runs, and two walks. Helson Fernandez worked 1.2 innings, and Michael Gonzalez threw 2.1 innings.

Talladega College steps out of conference competition briefly Tuesday with a home game against Georgia Gwinnett set for 1 p.m.
