Dega Splits SSAC DH with #23 Loyola

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College baseball team opened Southern States Athletic Conference competition with a doubleheader split against #23 Loyola University New Orleans Saturday. The visiting Wolf Pack won the first game 7-4, and the Tornadoes came away victorious from game two, 7-1.
 
GAME 1 – #23 Loyola 7, Talladega 4 (7 innings)
 
The Wolf Pack (14-7, 1-1 SSAC) struck early with a pair of runs thanks to RBIs from Cole Romero and Christopher Bohrer.
 
Dega (9-7-1, 1-1 SSAC) struck back and took the lead in the third, starting with Issac Guzman scoring after an error allowed Wander Arias to reach first. With the bases loaded, Armando Jackson was hit by a pitch that allowed Darlin Fernandez to touch home plate. Arias capped the inning by scoring on a wild pitch to put the Tornadoes up 3-2.
 
Both teams scored in the fourth, starting with an RBI single by Tucker Ganley to tie the contest at 3-3. Talladega responded with Arias scoring on another wild pitch to reclaim the lead.
 
Loyola tied the matchup in the sixth when Kason Cullins used a sacrifice fly to right field. The team took control in the seventh with an RBI single from Aaron Davis, Jake Mills scored on an error, and Cullins smacked a double to right field, resulting in a run to give the Wolf Pack the final 7-4 lead.
 
Jackson finished as the batting leader for Dega in the first game after he went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Arias scored two runs and grabbed a stolen base. Rafael Diaz also stole a base.
 
Samuel Guadamuz (0-1) received the decision in 1.2 innings of work after posting a strikeout but surrendering three hits, a walk, and an earned run. Michael Gonzalez pitched 4.0 innings with three strikeouts, allowing seven hits and an earned run. Juan Peña went 1.1 innings in relief and notched three strikeouts, three hits, and an earned run.
 
GAME 2 –Talladega 7, #23 Loyola 1
 
Fernandez started the second leg of the doubleheader with fireworks thanks to a lead-off homer to left field. Dega extended the lead in the third when Jackson singled to right field, allowing Miguel Oropeza to cross home plate. Jose Santiago scored on a wild pitch to put the Tornadoes up 3-0. Fernandez hit an RBI single to left as Jesuette Dominguez scored to extend the lead to 4-0.
 
Ross Selvaggi pushed the lone RBI for the Wolf Pack in the game in the fifth, thanks to a sacrifice fly to bring in Romero and cut the lead to 4-1.
 
Dega put the contest away in the sixth, starting with a sacrifice fly from Oropeza to plate Yahil Figueroa. Santiago smacked a single to center field for an RBI to bring in Darlin Fernandez, and Jackson hit an RBI single to left field as Arias scored to give the Tornadoes the final 7-1 margin and earn the doubleheader split.
 
Armando led at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort alongside two RBIs. Darlin Fernandez went 2-for4 with two runs, two RBIs, a home run, a stolen base, and a walk.
 
Jose Franco (3-0) earned the win in five innings of work with five strikeouts, eight hits allowed, a walk, and an earned run. Ramses Ortega pitched 4.0 innings of relief, totaling five strikeouts, six surrendered hits and a walk.
 
Talladega and Loyola conclude the SSAC series tomorrow at noon.
