Late Rally Grants #23 Game and Series Win over Dega

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Runs were plentiful in the competitive conclusion to the Southern States Athletic Conference matchup between the Talladega College baseball team and the #23 Loyola University New Orleans Wolf Pack Sunday afternoon. In the end, Loyola scored key runs late to grab an 11-9 road win to claim the series.

Dega (9-8-1, 1-2 SSAC) used an aggressive approach early, proving fruitful as Wander Arias smashed his second homer of the season to left field in the first inning.

The Wolf Pack (15-7, 2-1 SSAC) responded in the second when Tucker Ganley scored after Kason Cullins drew a bases-loaded walk to get Loyola a run and tie the matchup at 1-1

However, The Tornadoes struck back in a big way during the bottom of the second as Issac Guzman drove a homer to right field, which also brought in Juan Carlos Terrero. Armando Jackson blasted a solo shot left and extended the Dega lead advantage to 4-1.

Loyola relied on small ball techniques in the fourth, scored on a fielder's choice, and used three consecutive RBI singles to take a 5-4 lead.

Talladega answered back in the bottom of the fourth with a two-RBI double from Darlin Fernandez to drive in Nomar Garcia and Guzman to go back ahead 6-5. The Tornadoes added more to the lead in the sixth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Miguel Oropeza to score Fernandez. Jose Santiago hit an RBI single up the middle to drive in Arias to take an 8-5 advantage.

The scoring did not slow down for 23rd-ranked Loyal as the Wolf Pack posted three runs in the seventh, starting with an RBI double by Jake Mills and capped by a two-run homer from Aaron Davis to tie the matchup at 8-8.

Talladega regained the lead in the eighth when a bases-loaded walk issued to Jackson allowed Guzman to trot in from third and put the Tornadoes on top 9-8.

Loyola mounted a final and decisive rally in the ninth when Brandon Mooney's lone hit In the contest registered as an RBI double to score three runs, which gave the Wolf Pack the final 11-9 advantage to clinch the game and the weekend series.

Guzman led Dega at the plate and went 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs, a home run, a double, and a walk. Darlin Fernandez finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a pair of stolen bases, and a run scored.

Samuel Guadamuz (0-2) took the loss in the blown save opportunity with two strikeouts but allowed two hits, a pair of walks, and three earned runs. Helson Fernandez went 3.0 innings in his start with a couple of strikeouts, three hits allowed, six walks and four earned runs. Juan Peña pitched 3.2 innings in relief and tossed five strikeouts alongside five hits and four earned runs. Niklas Weldon struck out one of four batters faced in his 1.1 innings of work.

Talladega College hosts Fisher College out of Boston, Massachusetts, on March 7 at 1 p.m. before heading to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, for an SSAC series against William Carey University on March 10-11.
