Dega Posts 30 Total Runs in DH Sweep

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – It was a banner day for the Talladega College baseball bats as the team posted 30 runs on the day in a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader with the Brewton-Parker College Barons Friday evening. The Tornadoes took the first game 14-11 and later earned the day's sweep with a 16-7 victory.

GAME ONE – Talladega 14, Brewton-Parker 11 (7 innings)

Armando Jackson started the party with a sacrifice fly to left field at the top of the first. Darlin Fernandez ran in from third to give Dega (17-10-1, 7-3 SSAC) the early one-run lead.

After BPC (9-22, 1-10 SSAC) answered with an RBI single from Tate Worrell in the bottom of the first, the Tornadoes came right back with four runs in the second, starting with a two-run homer from Nomar Garcia to bring in Miguel Oropeza. Fernandez followed with a triple to right center to bring in Jose Gonzalez, while Wander Arias concluded the big inning with a single to left field, which plated Fernandez.

The Barons scored two in the second, capped by a bases-loaded walk drawn by Eduardo Castillo, which allowed Drew DeMasi to come home.

Both teams lit up the scoreboard in the fifth inning, with Dega posting eight runs compared to six from Brewton-Parker. Oropeza singled through the left side for two RBIs, Rafael Diaz blasted a three-run homer to right field, and Arias concluded with a double to right center for three RBIs to build to a 13-3 advantage.

Brewton-Parker's runs came slow and steady, with the team needing six unique scoring situations capped by an RBI by Castillo to close the gap to 13-9.

Santiago posted one more run in the sixth and scored on a wild pitch to go up 14-9.

Worrell provided the final two RBIs of the opening game with a single to plate Brandon Lawrence and Johnathan Phillips to round the scoring 14-11 in favor of Dega.

Samuel Guadamuz (3-2) picked up the win on the mound in four innings of work. The freshman right-hander struck out five batters but allowed five hits, five walks, and six earned runs. Juan Peña earned his second save of the season in 2.2 innings of work with three strikeouts, three hits allowed and two earned runs.

GAME TWO – Talladega 16, Brewton-Parker 7

BPC tried to take control early with RBIs from Castillo and Malik Germany in the first. However, Dega responded in the top of the second with an RBI single from Garcia to drive in Diaz, and a home run by Fernandez to left for three RBIs as Issac Guzman and Garcia helped to put the Tornadoes up 4-2.

The Barons regained control in the second with a grand slam to left center by Castillo to move the tally to 6-4.

However, Talladega's bats started to heat up again, beginning with Arias scoring on a passed ball in the fifth. The Tornadoes exploded for seven runs in the sixth, commencing with a two-run homer by Arias to plate Fernandez. After Joelvin Dilone scored on an error by Lawrence, Diaz singled in Santiago. Garcia followed with a two-RBI single to left, and Andres Puello put a bow on the big inning with an RBI single to put Dega up 12-6.

Talladega continued the scoring run in the eighth, with Fernandez collecting an RBI single through the left side and Oropeza drawing a bases-loaded walk for Puello to touch home. In the ninth, Gracia blasted a solo home run to left field, and Jahir Cruz scored on a defensive miscue for the 16th Dega run of the game.

Kyran Coleman posted one last RBI for the Barons with a single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth, but the deficit was too much to overcome as Talladega secured the 16-7 victory.

Ramses Ortega (2-1) recorded the win in six innings of relief work and struck out six batters while limiting the Barons to one earned run and eight hits. Jose Franco pitched three innings in the starting effort.

Weather permitting, Talladega College and Brewton-Parker College will conclude the SSAC series Saturday at 11 a.m. CDT.
