Tornadoes Breeze by Faulkner in a 3-1 Win

TALLADEGA, Ala. – In a Southern States Athletic Conferences contest that spanned just over two hours, the Talladega College baseball team made quick work of the visiting Faulkner University Eagles to open the weekend series Saturday afternoon in a 3-1 victory.

Despite only four total runs crossing the plate, the teams combined for 14 hits, with Faulkner (12-12, 3-4 SSAC) collecting eight hits and Dega coming away with six.

The Tornadoes (14-9-1, 4-2 SSAC) struck early with an RBI from Jose Santiago to bring in Wander Arias in the first inning.

Bats for both sides fell silent until the sixth, when Arias blasted his fourth homer of the season to right field. Darlin Fernandez scored during the play to push the lead to 3-0 for Dega.

Zakary Farris pushed the lone run for the Eagles across in the seventh, used a sacrifice fly to plate Francisco Soriano, and brought the score to the 3-1 final.

Arias finished as the leader at the plate for Talladega after he went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and the game-breaking home run. Miguel Oropeza and Andres Puello both registered doubles.

Jose Franco (5-0) pitched seven innings with five strikeouts while allowing six hits, a walk, and an earned run. Ramses Ortega earned his second save of the season in two innings of relief, as he struck out a pair of batters and allowed two hits and a walk.

Talladega College and Faulkner will reconvene tomorrow for an SSAC doubleheader scheduled for a noon start in Talladega, Alabama.
