Dega Blasts Tuskegee in 19-8 Victory

TUSKEGEE, Ala. – Offense was not in short supply for the Talladega College baseball team or the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers. Still, the Tornadoes scored early and often on the way to a 19-8-win Tuesday afternoon in eight innings at Washington Field over the NCAA Division II opponent.

Talladega (13-9-1) was the first to strike in the top of the third inning when Wander Arias single to center field for two RBIs as Darlin Fernandez and Juan Carlos Terrero crossed home. Jose Santiago later capped the inning with a three-run homer to left as Miguel Oropeza and Arias both touched home to put the Tornadoes up 5-0.

The Golden Tigers (5-15) posted a run in the bottom of the third and scored on an outfield error. Kyle Douglas received credit for the RBI to cut the deficit to 5-1 for Tuskegee.

Dega and Tuskegee traded runs in the fourth. In the top of the inning, Arias hit a solo homer to left field. Julian Grier responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double to move the score to 6-2 in favor of the Tornadoes.

The teams combined for nine total runs in the fifth. Fernandez hit a single to third base for an RBI as Allen Morel scored, Terrero stole home for a run, and Arias registered another RBI off a double to right field to bring in Fernandez.

Tuskegee battled back in the big inning to nearly tie the contest and scored six runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Jeremy Hawkins and a two-run homer by Grier to cut the score to 9-8.

The Tornadoes put the game away, starting in the sixth. Issac Guzman doubled to left field, and Rhyan Hayes scored. Morel crossed home after Juan Gonzalez received an RBI after a groundout to the shortstop Alex Glass.

Then in the eighth, Luis Cardona and Santiago both received bases-loaded walks for RBIs, as Guzman and Gonzalez scored, respectfully. Jesuette Dominguez smashed a two-RBI single to center as Cardona and Arias scored. Guzman closed the door for good with a grand slam to left field as Morel, Dominguez and Santiago touched home to give Dega a commanding 19-8 lead. The margin held as the final in eight innings of play.

Guzman finished as the battling leader thanks to a 3-for-5 effort with five RBIs, two runs, a grand slam, and a double. Arias (3-for-4) and Santiago (1-for-4) both posted four RBIs. Fernandez, Dominguez, Morel and Terrero all stole a base in the contest.

Weldon Niklas (1-1) received the pitching decision in 1.2 innings of work in relief, as he struck out a pair of batters and surrendered six hits and seven earned runs. Juan Peña pitched three innings as the starter and posted seven strikeouts with three hits and two walks allowed. Luis Cardona (1.1 innings), Armando Jackson (1.0 innings), and Oliver Cruz (0.2 innings) made relief appearances for the Tornadoes.
