Wild Rally Leads to SSAC Series Win for Dega over WCU

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After dropping the first game of today's doubleheader and following behind early in game two, the Talladega College baseball team rallied to split the day with the William Carey University Crusaders. The split, coupled with a win over WCU Friday evening, gave the Tornadoes their first Southern States Athletic Conference series win for the 2023 season.

GAME 1 – Talladega 6, William Carey 2

The Tornadoes (12-9-1, 3-2 SSAC) continued a trend of starting fast when Darlin Fernandez scored thanks to an error by WCU's third baseman Brady Wilson in the first inning. Nomar Garcia scored on a wild pitch in the second to push Dega to a 2-0 lead.

RJ Stinson scored on a wild pitch to get William Carey (16-6, 1-2 SSAC) on the board and cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth.

Fernandez responded in the sixth with a single through the left side to bring in Jaquan Nieves. Talladega pushed the lead even further in the eighth when Jose Santiago smashed a two-RBI double to right center as Miguel Oropeza, and Issac Guzman came in to score. Armando Jackson followed with a single through the right side to bring around Santiago as the Tornadoes pushed the lead to 6-1.

The Crusaders attempted to rally in the eighth when Braydon Coffey hit an RBI single for Bailee Hendon to cross home, but this represented the game's final run as Dega grabbed a 6-2 victory to open the series.

Fernandez led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with a run, RBI, and a walk. The centerfielder posted a stolen base and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Jackson went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and drew two walks.

Jose Franco (4-0) tossed six innings, struck out seven batters, and surrendered five hits, two walks, and no earned runs. Ramses Ortega earned his first save of the season in three innings of work and posted four strikeouts with five hits and an earned run allowed.

GAME 2 – William Carey 11, Talladega 3 (7 innings)

In the first game of Saturday's scheduled seven-inning doubleheader, the Crusaders' bats came out hot and never slowed down, with runs scored in five of six offensive half-innings.

William Carey scored all 11 runs before the Tornadoes finally posted three runs in the seventh when Jackson was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded for a painful RBI as Joelvin Dilone trotted in from third. Jahir Cruz followed with a single to right field, which was good for two RBIs as Jackson and Wander Arias scored to move the tally to the 11-3 final.

Michael Gonzalez (2-1) took the loss after he threw two innings and allowed five hits and four earned runs. Winston Garcia (1.2 innings), Nikals Weldon (0.1 innings), and Olive Cruz (two innings) all made relief appearances.

GAME 3 – Talladega 6, William Carey 4

WCU started fast again with three runs in the first and a solo homer from Jake Lycette to extend the lead to 4-0 in the third.

However, Talladega answered back by taking advantage of costly Crusader blunders, starting in the fourth when Oropeza scored on a passed ball. Santiago scored after an error by Rigoberto Hernandez at second base allowed Guzman to reach first safely. Jesuette Dominguez and Andres Puello both scored after an error by Caleb Laird led to Guzman getting to second safely, Darlin Fernandez stood aboard first after the fielder's choice, and the crazy rally ended with the score tied 4-4.

Dega claimed the lead in the fifth when Dominguez laid down a sacrifice bunt, giving Oropeza time to slide in from third. Santiago followed by flashing his speed to steal home and provide the tornadoes with a 6-4 lead.

Oropeza finished the series finale with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate, smashed a double, scored two runs, and drew a walk.

Samuel Guadamuz (1-2) pitched 4.2 innings in his winning start and posted four strikeouts, five hits allowed, four walks, and four earned runs. Helson Fernandez earned his first save of the season after tossing 4.1 hitless innings with three strikeouts and only two walks allowed.

Talladega College returns to action Tuesday against NCAA Division II opponent Tuskegee University with the first pitch scheduled for noon in Tuskegee, Alabama.
