Tornadoes Fall on Trip to FHU

HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Freed-Hardemon University Lions jumped ahead early, and the Talladega College baseball team never caught up in a 6-1 loss Tuesday afternoon at Five Wells Field.

FHU (10-8) wasted no time putting some offense on the road-weary Tornadoes (8-6-1), playing their fifth road contest in five days. The Lions, who received votes in last week's coaches' poll, posted runs in the first and second innings, including a two-run homer by Baron Ratliff to put Freed-Hardemon up 3-0.

Anthony Jarvis followed the long shot with a home run of his own in the fourth, and Zach Sanders smacked an RBI single through the right side to move the score to 5-0. Will McCall added a single to right field in the seventh to give the hosting Lions a commanding 6-0 lead.

Darlin Fernandez helped Dega avoid the shutout with an infield single in the eighth to plate Andres Puello and bring the score to the 6-1 final mark.

Miguel Oropeza had the other of two hits for the Tornadoes and went 1-for-4 at the plate. Issac Guzman and Juan Gonzalez both walked twice, while Juan Carlos Terrero was able to grab a stolen base.

Niklas Weldon (0-1) took the decision after he pitched 3.1 innings with a strikeout but allowed six hits, five earned runs, and a walk. Samuel Guadamuz threw 4.2 innings with five strikeouts and surrendered three hits, a walk, and an earned run.

After a week on the road, Talladega College prepares to host the #23 Loyola University New Orleans Wolfpack at Silsby Baseball Field for the first Southern States Athletic Conference series of the season on March 3-4. The first pitch on Friday is set for 2 p.m.
