Tornadoes Split Series with Webber International

BABSON PARK, Fla. – Facing some still competition in central Florida, the Talladega College split a two-day, four-game series with the Webber International Warriors this weekend at Brad Niethammer Field. Webber won the first game on Friday, 3-2, but Talladega took the second game, 5-3. The Tornadoes opened Saturday with a 6-5 win but lost the series finale 6-5 to Webber.

GAME 1 – Webber 3, Talladega 2

The Tornadoes posted the first two runs of the series off the bat of Jose Santiago with a double to right field to plate Miguel Oropeza in the first. Santiago followed with a single up the middle in the fourth to bring in Oropeza for a second time.

However, a home run by Luis Acevedo in the fourth, a Bryan Morales RBI double in the sixth, and a walk of hit-by-pitch allowed Acevado to score and give the Warriors the 3-2 win to open the series.

Santiago finished the game 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a walk. Jose Franco pitched 5.1 innings in the start, recorded four strikeouts, and surrendered three hits and two earned runs. Beau Neely (1-1) took the loss in an inning of relief with two strikeouts, two walks, and a hit allowed. Ramses Ortega also pitched 2.1 innings of relief.

GAME 2 – Talladega 5, Webber 3 (7 innings)

Wander Arias used a two-RBI single in the fifth, which scored Isaac Guzman and Andres Puello. Oropeza continued the big inning with a single to right to bring in Arias. Santiago cleared the bases with a homer as he and Jahir Cruz scored to put Talladega up 5-0 in the day's second contest.

The Warriors attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh with two runs, but the comeback attempt fell short and gave Dega the team's first win of the series.

Arias went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base. Santiago posted two RBIs and the game-sealing homer while going 2-for-3 at the dish.

Michael Gonzalez (2-0) went six innings to win his second start of the season as the freshman struck out four batters and allowed four hits and four walks. Samuel Guadamuz pitched an inning of relief and threw two strikeouts but gave up two hits and two earned runs.

GAME 3 – Talladega 6, Webber 5 (7 innings)

Darlin Fernandez continued the trend of Dega scoring first thanks to a lead-off homer to start the action Saturday afternoon. Nomar Garcia added to the lead with a single down the right field line to bring in Jaquan Nieves and Cruz to push the Tornadoes' lead to 3-0.

After the Warriors added two runs in the fourth, Nieves smashed a single toward left field in the fifth, and Santiago scored to push the lead to 4-2 in favor of Talladega.

Angel Diaz brought Webber back in a big way in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer to put the Warriors ahead 5-4 for the lead for the team outside of the final inning. Dega responded in the seventh with a solo home run by Santiago, and Cruz scored on an error by the third baseman to take the winning 6-5 advantage.

Neely (2-1) earned the win with 1.2 innings pitched in relief, struck out a batter and allowed two hits. Samuel Guadamuz earned his second save of the season as he struck out the game's final batter. Helson Fernandez threw 4.2 innings to start the contest and posted two strikeouts while giving up five walks, three hits and two earned runs.

GAME 4 – Webber 6, Talladega 5

For the fourth straight matchup, the Tornadoes scored first. This time Rafael Diaz registered the first RBI with a single through the right side to allow Arias to touch home plate. Armando Jackson followed with another single through the right side as Nieves scored to put Dega up 2-0 after a half-inning of play.

Webber posted four runs in the third, capped by an RBI single from Josh Blackmore to give the Warriors a 4-2 advantage.

Dega responded in the fourth as Juan Gonzalez doubled down the left field line to bring in Diaz, and Guzman smashed a two-RBI double down the left line to plate Cruz and Juan Gonzalez to put the Tornadoes back on top 5-4.

However, Webber grabbed the lead back in the sixth as Tommy Diaz, and Zachary Schneidmiller scored on a passed ball to put the team up 6-5, which was the final score to end the series.

Oliver Cruz (0-1) took the loss in 3.2 innings of relief with three walks, two hit batters, a hit, and an earned run surrendered. Winston Garcia pitched two innings and threw three strikeouts with five walks, four earned runs, and a hit allowed.

After the long weekend of games, Talladega College (8-5-1) will have one more contest on the road as the team travels to Henderson, Tennessee, to face Freed-Hardeman University. The first pitch against the Lions is scheduled for 3 p.m.
