Tornadoes Volleyball Sweeps Barons

TALLADEGA, Ala. - The Talladega College volleyball team took to the floor at home on Tuesday night looking to bounce back after a tough loss open the Southern States Athletic Conference slate on Saturday afternoon. The Tornadoes did just that in convincing fashion, sweeping away Brewton-Parker College.

Talladega (7-2, 1-1 SSAC) cruised through the first set, and while BPC (0-10, 0-3 SSAC) put up more of a fight in the second and third frames, the Tornadoes completed the sweep 25-14, 25-21, 25-23.

BPC took three of the first four points of the match, but the Tornadoes immediately bounced back. The Barons won consecutive points only twice in the set, and the Tornadoes put together runs of 9-2, 6-1, and 6-1 later in the stanza on their way to the 25-14 win in the opening set.

Set two was evenly played for much of the stanza. Talladega opened an early 8-5 lead in the frame, but BPC rallied to knot the score at 9 midway through the period. The score remained close through the middle stages of the set, and the teams traded the lead twice in the latter stages of play, but Talladega closed the frame on a 5-0 run to take the win 25-21 and build a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

The Tornadoes raced out of the gates in the third set, as they won five of the first six points, but BPC whittled away and clawed back into the set. The Barons closed the gap to 10-9 and forced a Talladega timeout, and after the Tornadoes built their lead back to 15-11, The Barons rattled off four straight points to tie the score at 15. The momentum, this time went with the Barons, as they opened up a 22-18 lead late in the stanza, but the Tornadoes rallied to finish the night on a 7-1 run and take the straight sets win, 25-23.

The Tornadoes notched 35 kills in the match with Nedu Evans recording eight, Zyaire-Prettie Garri scoring seven, Mahalynn Sawyer, Josephine Gates, and Tianah Sanders each putting down five, and Mia Sterling adding four.. Maloree Calzadillas led the Tornadoes with 15 assists, and Raven Clatter added 10 more helpers, and Kenya Glenn pulled up a team-best 11 digs. Gates also added a trio of block assists in the match, and Calzadillas blistered four aces.

The Tornadoes will next hit the road for a difficult SSAC weekend tour of the Delta, when they head southwest to take on a pair of teams receiving votes in the most recent NAIA volleyball top-25 poll. On Friday night at 6 p.m., Talladega will head to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to take on the Crusaders of William Carey University (15-0, 3-0 SSAC), then on Saturday they will head to the Big Easy to take on the Loyola University Wolfpack (9-6, 2-1 SSAC) at 1 p.m. in New Orleans.
