JACKSON, Tenn. – It was a day of highs and lows for the Talledega College women's volleyball team as it split a pair of matches to open the 2022 season in the J. F. Lane Gymnasium at Lane College with a win over Rust College and a loss to Lane.
The Tornadoes (1-1) started the day in dominant fashion with a 3-0 (28-26, 25-14, 25-14) victory over Rust.
The duo of
Nedu Evans and
Josephine Gates combined for 17 of Talldega's 24 total kills with Evans accounting for nine and Gates adding eight kills.
Raven Clater kept the offense moving and passed 10 assists.
Kenya Glenn led backrow with five digs while Clater posted four. Gates paced the team at the net defensively with two block assists.
As a team, the Tornadoes produced 16 service aces and six block assists against Rust College. Alandria Calhoun finished with four digs to lead the Rust attack.
However, Talldega could not keep the momentum going in the second contest as Lane College claimed the 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-20) sweep against the Tornadoes in the night contest.
Evans once again led the attack with seven kills while
Tianah Sanders finished right behind her with six kills. Clater passsed 10 assists for a second time and
Maloree Calzadillas added nine assists.
Glenn once again led the backline with 12 digs and Gates put in work at the net with three solo blocks and a block assist.
Bre'elle Hawkins finished with a team leading 14 kills for Lane College while Jazmyne Jones passed 23 assists.
Talladega College (1-1) returns to action tomorrow with with another doubleheader. The first match will see the Tornadoes face Tougaloo College at 10 a.m. with the second match of the day scheduled for 2 p.m. against Rust for the second time in as many days.
