Talladega College Women's Basketball leaned on toughness on the glass and timely defense to secure a 63-59 conference victory over Voorhees University on Wednesday night (Feb. 4) inside the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
The game opened evenly, with both teams locked at 13-13 after the first quarter. Talladega began to create separation in the second period, using energy on the boards and active hands defensively to take a 30-25 lead into halftime. Voorhees stayed within striking distance in the third quarter, trimming the margin to four, but the Lady Tornadoes continued to answer every push and carried a 46-42 advantage into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Talladega showed poise down the stretch, building its lead to seven before closing out the win at the free-throw line and with key defensive stops. The Lady Tornadoes finished the night with 44 total rebounds, including 20 on the offensive end, while forcing 22 turnovers and converting those into 26 points.
Kameron Jones led Talladega with 18 points and eight rebounds, providing a steady presence throughout the game. Kiersten Usher anchored the effort on the glass with a game-high 13 rebounds while also adding four assists and three steals. Ja'Kalynn McGinnis chipped in nine points and four rebounds, while Courtney Lowe added eight points. Teanna Watts contributed across the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, and Olympia Chaney finished with seven points. Talladega's bench played a key role, combining for 22 points in the victory.
Voorhees was led by Kimmya Epps with 15 points, while Sommer Joseph added 12 points and seven rebounds. Shykiera Brown also reached double figures with 10 points, but the Lady Tornadoes' ability to control the boards and generate offense from defense proved to be the difference.
Talladega will look to build on the momentum from the conference win as it continues HBCUAC play.
