Talladega softball takes series from Voorhees

DENMARK, S.C. – The Talladega softball team took on Voorhees in HBCUAC play over the weekend, bookending a win in the first and final games to take the series 2-1. The Tornadoes have now won two of their last three league series dating back to March 21.

Talladega finishes with a 4-1 record against Voorhees this season, outscoring the Tigers 54-23 in that stretch.

The opener saw the Talladega offense explode for 13 runs, including five in the first inning and another five in the fifth. Everything was clicking for the Tornadoes in Game One, with Sofi Wagner-Stiles going the distance and fanning 11 Voorhees hitters en route to the shutout win.

Centerfielder Sarah Couey led the onslaught, picking up a pair of base hits and driving in five runs. Miani Burton added two hits of her own to go with three RBI, and eight different Talladega baserunners were able to cross the plate.

The Tigers bounced back with a 10-9 win in Game Two, but Talladega leadoff hitter Mia Vasquez was the premier performer of the game. Vasquez finished a home run short of the cycle, driving in four RBI along the way.

Miranda Butler was saddled with the loss in the circle despite turning in a season-high nine strikeouts.

In Sunday's series finale, Talladega used five of their ten hits to produce a six-run third inning before holding on to close out the weekend with a 7-2 victory. Burton, Jazzmeen Bibbins and Georgia Wagner-Stiles paced the Tornadoes with two hits apiece, while Sofi Wagner-Stiles grabbed her second victory of the series behind 10 more strikeouts.

Talladega will now turn the focus to the final regular season games of the year, a doubleheader against Crowley's Ridge. First pitch from Oxford is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
