Baseball Ends Regular Season with Win Over Rust

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – The Talladega College baseball team completed the series sweep with an 11-3 five-inning win over Rust College this afternoon. The Tornadoes finish the regular season at 36-14 and 27-3 in the conference while extending their win streak to 10 games. Rust dropped to 22-26 and 13-17 in the HBCUAC.

After a scoreless first inning, Darlin Fernandez put Talladega on the board in the top of the second with a home run to dead center to make it 1-0.

Talladega broke the game open in the top of the third when it pushed five runs across to go up 6-0. It started when Miguel Oropeza and Jahir Cruz each walked with one down.  Oropeza then moved to third off a passed ball and later scored off Isaac Guzman's RBI single to left. Cruz moved to third on the play. Guzman then stole second, and an error by the catcher allowed Cruz to score and send Guzman to third. Fernandez drove Guzman in with an RBI single to left and later moved to second when Fernando Crisostomo singled to left. Both runners moved up 90 feet off a passed ball.  Jeriel Lamboy loaded the bases full of Tornadoes when he walked.

With one out still, Jonathan Williams drove in Fernandez off a fielder's choice and sent Lamboy to third. Crisostom was out at third on the play. Diego Duque's RBI single to third allowed Lamboy to score the team's fifth run of the inning.

Rust was able to get on the board in its half of the third inning to cut the lead to 6-2.

Talladega pushed two runs across in the fourth and three in the fifth to push its lead to 11-2, but Rust added a run in the fifth to make it 11-3 before the inning ended.

Fernandez finished the day going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, four RBIs, and a home run. He tallied the team's only extra-base hit of the contest.

Oropeza tallied a hit, a pair of runs scored, and two RBIs on the day.

Starter Daniel Jose allowed two runs on four hits over four innings of work to earn the win and improve to 5-2 on the season.

Talladega is back in action on Wednesday at noon when it faces Wilberforce University in the opening round of the HBCUAC Baseball Championship in Little Rock, Arkansas.
