DECATUR, Ala. – A day after defeating Voorhees 12-4 to open the HBCUAC Championship Tournament, the Talladega softball team saw the season come to a close on Thursday afternoon. The Tornadoes dropped a heartbreaker to Dillard by a final of 5-4 before ending up on the wrong side of a 3-0 matchup against Rust in the season finale.
Â
Talladega erupted for 11 hits in Wednesday's tournament opener, including three from second baseman
Emma Givens.
Sophia McPhie and
Georgia Wagner-Stiles added two base hits apiece, and six different Tornadoes recorded an RBI in the run-rule victory.
Â
Miranda Butler picked up the win in the circle for the Tornadoes, scattering six hits and striking out nine Voorhees hitters for the second time this spring. In her last two outings against the Tigers, Butler has totaled 18 strikeouts over 11 innings of work.
Â
McPhie went right back to work with three hits to lead the offense in the second game of the week, which was scheduled for Wednesday but weather delayed to Thursday morning. Â The Tornadoes gave Dillard all they could handle, but the Bleu Devils scratched across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Â
In the weekend's third game, Rust plated a run in each of the first three innings, but Talladega's offense was held in check the whole way.
Miani Burton picked up half of the team's hits, with Vasquez and
Georgia Wagner-Stiles each adding one of their own.
Two Talladega players were named
All-Conference selections, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Talladega closes out the 2025 season with 13 wins, matching the Tornadoes' highest mark since the 2019 campaign.
