Baseball Takes Two from Philander Smith

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College baseball team extended its winning streak to six with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Philander Smith University this afternoon. The Tornadoes took game one 11-0 while picking up a 15-2 win in game two.

Talladega is now 32-14 overall and 22-2 in the conference, while the Panthers fall to 3-27 and 3-20 in the HBCUAC.

Talladega looks to close out the series and go for the sweep tomorrow when it hosts Philander Smith in the final home regular-season game at noon.

Game 1: Talladega 11, Philander Smith 0 – 7 innings
Headed into the bottom of the third scoreless, the Tornadoes struck first as they pushed three runs across on one hit. It started when Jonathan Williams singled to left and then stole second. He later moved to third when Joshua Catala Santos reached first and moved to second on a throwing error by the third baseman. With no outs and two men on, Victor Rivera walked to load the bases. Williams later scored off Miguel Oropeza's sacrifice fly to left to make it 1-0, and a throwing error by the shortstop allowed Catala Santos to score to push the lead to 2-0. Rivera moved to third on the play. Rivera later scored off Jahir Cruz's sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0 before the inning ended.

Talladega added four runs in the fourth and four in the sixth to push the lead to 11-0 and hold on for the win.

As a team, Talladega tallied five stolen bases and six walks in the contest.

Williams finished the game going a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs, and three runs scored.  His teammate Jederick Velazquez was 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Starter Emilio Duque threw a complete game shutout, allowing five hits and no runs while striking out 10 to improve to 8-2 on the year.

Game 2: Talladega 15, Philander Smith 2 – 7 innings
With one down and up 4-2 in the fourth, Talladega's Catala Santos reached first on a bunt single and then stole second before moving to third on a throwing error by the catcher.  With a runner on third, Rivera walked, but was later picked off at first for the second out. Catala Santos later scored off Oropeza's triple into the right center field gap to make it 5-2. Jaquan Nieves kept the inning going with an RBI single to left to score Oropeza and extend the lead to 6-2. He later moved to second when Isaac Guzman singled to right. Both runners later scored off Darlin Fernandez's single to make it an 8-2 game before the frame came to an end.

The Tornadoes went on to add four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to push their lead to 15-2.

Talladega as a team tallied seven stolen baes with Catala Santos finishing with a team-high four.

Talladega starter Samuel Guadamuz picked up the win to improve to 9-1 on the season. He scattered four hits over five innings, while allowing two runs (both earned) and fanning six.

The Tornado bullpen allowed one hit over two innings of work while striking out two.

Oropeza finished game two going 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, three RBIs, and three runs scored.

Fernandez and Guzman combined to go 4-for-8 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a triple.
