HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – The Talladega softball team split a conference twin bill on Sunday afternoon, finding themselves on both sides of a shutout. The Tornadoes dropped Sunday's opener by a final of 5-0 before bouncing back in the nightcap with a 6-0 victory.
The Talladega offense was held in check in Game One, with Mia Vasquez and
Sarah Couey providing a hit apiece to highlight the effort. Rust did their damage with a two-run second and a three-run fifth, while Leona Joshua picked up the win in the circle.
The Tornadoes flipped the script in the nightcap, scratching across a run in the opening frame behind a successful double steal of second and home.
Georgia Wagner-Stiles sparked a bases-loaded triple in the fifth, and
Jazzmeen Bibbins followed with an infield single to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
Kayhlen Washington's single to left in the top of the sixth brought home Couey to extend the lead to five runs, and Vasquez trotted into score on hard-hit sac fly off the bat off Wagner-Stiles to add on one more in the final stanza.
Washington ended the game with a 3-for-4 performance from the leadoff spot in the Talladega order, while Wagner-Stiles and Bibbins picked up two hits each.
Sofi Wagner-Stiles tossed her second one-hitter in as many days, going the distance and fanning 11 Rust hitters in the victory.
