Baseball Complete Series Sweep Over SUNO

NEW ORLEANS, La. -  The Talladega College baseball team completed the series sweep with a 12-8 road conference win this afternoon against Southern University at New Orleans.  Talladega is now 29-14 and 21-3 in the HBCUAC, while SUNO falls to 20-15 and 16-7 in the conference.

Tied at three going into the top of the third, Talladega wasted no time reclaiming the lead as it plated three runs on three hits. It all started when Jahir Cruz walked to open the frame. Following a flyout, Darlin Fernandez singled to right field, which sent Cruz to third. He later scored off of Armando Jackson's RBI single to right to make it 4-3.  Fernandez took third on the play. A SUNO balk allowed Fernandez to score to push the lead to 5-3 and send Jackson to second. Talladega added to its lead to make it 6-3 when Jackson scored from second off of Jederick Velazquez's RBI single to left before the inning closed.

The Tornadoes added a pair of runs in the fourth to increase their lead to 8-3, but a four-run bottom of the fourth for SUNO cut the lead to 8-7.

Talladega added two runs in the fifth and sixth to go up 12-7, but SUNO got one of the runs back to trail 12-8 before the Tornadoes closed the contest out to secure the win.

Miguel Oropeza and Fernandez combined going 6-for-9 with five runs scored, three RBIs, a double, two home runs, and two stolen bases.

Joshua Catala Santos, Jackson, and Velazquez each finished with two hits apiece. Santos tallied the team's only triple on the day.

Reliever Helson Fernandez picked up the win to move to 2-1 on the season. He allowed one run on four hits over four innings.

Talladega is home on Tuesday when it hosts Freed-Hardeman University for its final non-conference game of the regular season at 1 p.m.
