Baseball Splits Weekly Non-Conference Doubleheader

TALLADEGA, Ala. -  The Talladega College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon, falling 14-12 in game one and rebounding with a 6-5 win in game two over visiting Point University.

Talladega is now 25-11 on the year, while Point is 14-23 on the season.

The Tornadoes are on the road this weekend to open up a three-game non-conference series at Bryan College. Game one is set for 3 p.m. on Friday.

Game 1: Talladega 12, Point 14 – 7 innings
Talladega took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second when it plated four runs on four hits. It started when Jonathan Williams reached first when he was hit by a pitch with one down. He later moved to second when Jeriel Lamboy walked. Victor Rivera loaded the bases when he singled to right. Both Williams and Lamboy later scored off Miguel Oropeza's two-run single to center to make it 5-2.

Rivera took second on the play. Rivera later scored off Jahira Cruz's RBI double to left to push the lead to 6-2. Oropeza advanced to third. Following a strikeout for the second out of the frame, Darlin Fernandez's RBI single to third scored Oropeza before the inning ended with Talladega up 7-2.

After a scoreless third, Point plated three runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-5, but in the bottom half of the frame, the Tornadoes pushed four runs across to make it 11-5. Talladega then added a run in the fifth, increasing its lead to 12-5.

The Skyhawks in the top of the sixth grabbed their first lead of the game as they scored nine runs on four hits to take a 14-12 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth and the seventh, Talladega threatened as it loaded the bases in back-to-back innings, but was unable to capitalize.

Oropeza tallied two hits while registering four RBIs, a home run, and two runs scored. He was one of four players with multiple hits. Teammate Fernandez paced all Tornadoes as he was a perfect 5-for-5 with a run scored, three RBIs, and a triple.

Starter Diego Duque allowed five runs on nine hits over five innings. Reliever Sandro Adames took the loss, allowing a run on one hit, going 1.2 innings.

Game 2: Talladega 6, Point 5 – 7 innings
With the game tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the third, Talladega retook the lead. Lamboy, Rivera, and Oropeza all walked to start the frame to load the bases.  An RBI fielder's choice by Cruz allowed Lamboy to score to make it 3-2 and send Rivera to third. Oropeza was out at second on the play. Cruz stole second on the next play, and Isaac Guzman walked to reload the bases. A second fielder's choice this time off the bat of Fernande scored Rivera to make it 4-2 before the inning ended.

Point added a run in the fourth to make it 4-3, but the Tornadoes added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to go up 6-3. The Skyhawks threatened in the sixth as they scored two runs to make it 6-5 but Talladega held on for the win.

Lamboy and Rivera combined going 4-for-5 with four runs scored, three walks, and an RBI.

Fernandez, who had a big first game, recorded three RBIs and a hit in game two.

Christian Delgado picked up his fifth win (5-0) of the season. He allowed three hits over 4.2 innings while giving up three runs and striking out three.  Reliever Samuel Guadamuz earned his second save of the season. He allowed two hits over 1.2 innings.
