Tornadoes split with Dillard, rubber match slated for Sunday

OXFORD, Ala. – The Talladega softball team wrapped up a doubleheader on Saturday, taking the opener by a tally of 8-7 against Dillard in extra innings before falling 10-2 in the nightcap.

Dillard plated two in the first inning, but the Tornadoes scratched across a run in each the second and fourth frames to pull even. The Bleu Devils again moved in front in the seventh, only to see Talladega match their effort in the home half to force extras.

The Dillard offense went right back to work in the eighth, plating three runs to take a 7-4 lead, but Talladega refused to go quietly in the bottom half of the inning. The Tornadoes manufactured runs, combining two Dillard errors, a walk, a fielder's choice and a hit batter to once again tie the game, paving the way for Addison Fields to drive in the game-winning run with an infield single.

Sofia McPhie gave the Tornadoes three hits from the leadoff spot in the lineup, while Fields, Georgia Wagner-Stiles and Sarah Couey each added two of their own. Wagner-Stiles went the distance in the circle, striking out seven Bleu Devils en route to earning the win.

Game Two was all Dillard, as a five-run third and a three-run sixth proved to be the difference. Six different Tornadoes came up with a base knock in the effort, with Fields credited with the team's lone RBI.

The series wraps up on Sunday, when the Tornadoes will look to win their second straight HBCUAC series. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
