Women's Basketball Handles the UVI Lady Buccaneers during HBCUAC Crossover

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's basketball team concluded their participation in the HBCUAC Crossover with a 53-43 victory over the University of the Virgin Islands Lady Buccaneers on January 6, 2025, at the Billy Hawkins Student Activity Center.

The Lady Tornadoes (6-5, 6-3) showcased their defensive prowess throughout the contest, holding the Lady Buccaneers (0-8, 0-7) to just 22.8% shooting from the field. Talladega's tenacity on defense was complemented by a balanced offensive effort led by Kameron Jones, who poured in 25 points and secured three rebounds.

Kameron Jones led all scorers with an impressive 25 points. Jones also contributed with three rebounds, two assists, and three steals, reflecting his all-around impact on the game.

The first quarter was a defensive struggle, with both teams managing only nine points. The Tornadoes found themselves tied with the Lady Buccaneers at the end of the frame. However, Talladega seized control in the second quarter, outscoring the UVI 15-12. The Tornadoes entered halftime with a narrow 24-21 lead.

In the third quarter, Talladega extended their lead to 36-32, thanks to a combination of effective shooting and strong rebounding. The Tornadoes capitalized on second-chance opportunities, finishing the game with nine second-chance points compared to UVI's three.

The final quarter saw Talladega pull away, outscoring the Lady Buccaneers 17-11. Jones continued to dominate, converting six of his eight free-throw attempts to help seal the win. DeJaria Lewis contributed significantly with 14 points and 16 rebounds, while Kayla Pryor added 11 points.

The Tornadoes finished the game shooting 30.9% from the field, including 11.8% from three-point range. They converted 53.1% of their free throws, while the Lady Buccaneers shot 45.5% from the charity stripe.
