FAIRFIELD, Ala. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team tallied its fifth straight win with this one coming on the road in a 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-20, 25-9) victory over NCAA Division II Miles College tonight. The Tornadoes moved to 13-6 while the Golden Bears fell to 0-9 on the season.
Miles took an early 6-2 in the first set but Talladega tallied back-to-back points to cut it to a two-point game. Both teams went back and forth where the Golden Bears held the edge 10-9, but the Tornadoes used a 5-4 run to tie the set at 14. Each team was tied again at 16 then again at 17 before one last time at 22. Talladega took the lead off a
Franchesca Rivas' kill to make it 23-22 but Miles answered with a kill of their own to tie things back up. Rivas again put the Tornadoes in front off of a kill to make it 24-23, but the Golden Bears tallied back-to-back points to take the set, 26-24.
Talladega took an early 2-0 lead in set two but later found themselves tied at nine before Miles took a 10-9 lead. The Tornadoes responded with a 6-0 run to go up 15-10, but the run was snapped when the Golden Bears tallied a pair of points to make it, 15-12. Talladega closed the set out on a 10-3 run to win the set 25-15 and tie the match at one.
The Tornadoes grabbed an 8-2 lead to open up the third set. Miles used a 4-1 run to get back into it and trail 9-6, but it wasn't enough as Talladega pushed its lead to, 15-9. The Golden Bears attempted to chip away at the lead as they would score the next four of the six points, but would still trail, 17-13. Both teams traded points but Miles was unable to close the gap as Talladega took the set 25-20 and went up 2-1 in the match.
Looking to close things out in set four, the Tornadoes once again jumped to an 8-2 lead before Miles tallied three straight points to cut the lead to three. Talladega answered with a 7-0 run to push its lead to 15-5 and later put together another run (6-1) to go up, 21-6. The Tornadoes claimed the set 25-9 and secured the 3-1 match win.
Rivas finished with a double-double with a match-high 18 kills and 10 digs for Talladega. Teammates
Re'na Ashley finished with 14 kills while
Zariah Messick registered 10 kills.
Giovana Costarelli finished with a team-high 31 assists while tying with
Marcelly Perez in aces with three.
Nuria Santos tallied 20 assists while adding five digs.
Briyith Echeverri recorded 20 digs while
Alexis Goodman had 10 of her own for the Tornadoes.
Talladega is back home on Thursday, Oct. 3 when it hosts Wilberforce University at 6 p.m.
