TALLADEGA, Ala. –
Giovana Costarelli tallied her 1,000
th Career Assist tonight to guide the Talladega College women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-5, 25-9) victory over conference foe Wilberforce University at home. The Tornadoes are now 14-6 and 8-1 while Wilberforce fell to 1-18 and 1-7 in the conference.
Talladega opened set one with an 11-4 lead before Wilberforce tallied its fifth point of the set. The Tornadoes controlled the set as they went on a 14-4 run to win 25-9 and go up 1-0 in the match.
The momentum from the last set carried over to set two as the Tornadoes leaped to a 12-3 lead. Talladega held Wilberforce to only two more points in the set as they used a 13-2 run to win, 25-5.
Going into the third set, Talladega looked to close the match out but Wilberforce tied things at three in the opening. The Tornadoes put together a 12-3 run to break the tie and take a 15-6 lead. Talladega closed the set out on a 10-3 run to win the set 25-9 and claim the match by a score of 3-0.
Costarelli finished the career night with 18 assists to lead Talladega while adding three aces and a pair of kills in the match.
Re'na Ashley and
Kortni Johnson paced the Tornadoes in kills with five each. Teammates
Josephine Gates,
Zariah Messick,
Azha Dudley,
Marcelly Perez, and
Franchesca Rivas each finished with four kills.
Talladega's
Nuria Santos tallied a match-high four aces while collecting 11 assists.
The Tornadoes are back in action next Wednesday, October 9 when they host William Carey University at 4 p.m.
