TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches against William Carey University and Miles College. The Tornadoes fell 3-2 against William Carey and bounced back in the late match with a 3-0 victory over Miles College.
Talladega is now 15-7 on the season while William Carey is 15-6 and Miles is 2-12.
The Tornadoes are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Oakwood University for a midweek conference match at 7 p.m.
Match 1: Talladega 2, William Carey 3 (23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 26-24, 8-15)
Talladega took an 11-4 lead in the opening set before William Carey worked its way back into the set. Once William Carey grabbed the lead it was able to go on to secure the 25-23 win in the opening set and take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
William Carey jumped out to a 7-1 lead in set two and were able to push the lead to, 13-4. The Tornadoes used a 12-6 run to climb right back and trail, 19-16. William Carey was able to hold off the Talladega rally as it went on to a 25-20 victory.
Looking to keep its hopes alive, Talladega looked to get back on track in set three. The Tornadoes did just that as they built up a 12-9 lead, but William Carey attempted to keep the set close as both teams traded points. Talladega was able to hold them off and take the set 25-20 and cut the match lead to 2-1.
In set four, William Carey opened up with a 4-1 lead, but back-to-back points from Talladega made it a one-point set. Both teams went back and forth with William and Carey up 9-6, but a 5-0 run by the Tornadoes put them in front, 11-9. Each team went back and forth most of the set with William Carey up 18-16, but a 5-0 run allowed Talladega to reclaim the lead. Again, the teams traded points but it was the Tornadoes who ended up on top with a 26-24 win to even the match at two.
Going into the final set of the match, both teams found themselves tied at three. William Carey broke the tie with a 4-0 run to go up 7-3 and that was enough as it held off Talladega to win the set 15-8 and take the match 3-2 from the Tornadoes.
Taquoia Rounds paced all Tornadoes with a double-double in kills with 10 and digs with 14. Teammate
Briyith Echeverri finished with a team-high 27 digs.
Giovana Costarelli once again tallied double-digits in assists this time with 19 while adding three kills.
Nuria Santos registered 10 assists of her on in the process.
Match 2: Talladega 3, Miles 0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-20)
Talladega as a team registered 39 kills to Miles' 15 while outhitting the Bears .317 to -.125 over three sets.
The Tornadoes finished with 16 block assists and a solo block for the match.
Josephine Gates paced Talladega with four block assists.
Re'na Ashley tallied 10 kills on 22 attacks while hitting .364. She also added two digs for the Tornadoes.
Marcelly Perez finished with eight kills of her own while adding three block assists. She hit .385 for the match.
Costarelli led the team in assists with 17 while tying for the led in aces with two. Teammate Santos added 15 assists of her own while recording four digs.
