HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team closed out the week with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-12) conference road win tonight against Oakwood University. With the win, Talladega is now 16-7 and 9-1 in the HBCUAC while Ambassadors fall to 8-13 overall and 6-5 in the conference.
Talladega trailed 2-0 early in the opening set, but put together a 9-1 run to go in front, 9-3. The Ambassadors responded with a 5-0 run to pull within one, but that was as close as they would come as the Tornadoes answered with a 7-0 run to make it, 16-8. Oakwood chipped away at the lead as it cut it to four but it wasn't enough as Talladega went on to win 25-15 to take the first set.
The Tornadoes wasted no time in the second set as they took a commanding 12-2 lead over Oakwood. The Ambassadors were able to tally three straight points to cut the lead to seven, but Talladega used a 7-0 run to push its lead to, 19-5. Talladega from that point on never looked back as it picked up a 25-13 win and pushed its lead to 2-0 in the match.
Oakwood looked to spoil Talladega's plans to close the match out in the third set as it took a 3-0 lead to start things off. Talladega responded with a 4-1 run to only find itself tied at four with the Ambassadors. The Tornadoes were able to string together a 9-1 run to take a 13-5 lead, its first big lead of the set. Talladega after that didn't allow Oakwood to come close as it closed out the set and match with a 25-12 win in set three.
Talladega as a team hit .365 for the match to Oakwoods, .097. The Tornadoes hit .500 in set two with 14 kills and an error on 26 attempts.
The Tornadoes for the match registered 45 kills over three sets to the Ambassadors' 21 kills.
As a team, Talladega recorded nine aces with
Nuria Santos having five of them while
Rhyan Clark finished with three of her own. Santo also added nine assists and nine digs.
Both
Re'na Ashley and
Franchesca Rivas tallied 14 kills apiece for Talladega. Ashley led all Tornadoes with a .522 hitting percentage for the match.
Giovana Costarelli once again led the Tornadoes in assists, this time with 24. Teammate
Briyith Echeverri paced the team in digs with 22.
Talladega is back on the road for another conference match when it travels to Rust College next Tuesday, October 15. The match starts at 6 p.m.
