Volleyball Defeats In-State Rival Stillman

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team downed in-state and conference rival Stillman College 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-7) tonight at home in HBCUAC action. With the win, the Tornadoes are now 9-6 and 4-1 in the conference while Stillman drops to 3-9 and 2-2.

With the opening set tied at two, Talladega used a 3-0 run to break the tie and go in front, 5-2. Stillman kept things close early as it trailed 5-4 and then 7-5, but the Tornadoes after that used an 18-4 run to take the set 25-7 and go up 1-0 in the match.

Talladega wasted no time in set two as it took an early 5-0 lead before Stillman got on the board to make it, 5-1. The Tornadoes were able to put together a 5-3 run to push their lead to 10-4 but Stillman scored the next three of five points to trail, 12-7. Talladega responded with a 5-0 run of its own to make it 17-7 but a Stillman kill snapped the run to make it, 17-8. With all the momentum on their side, the Tornadoes closed things out on an 8-4 run to win 25-12 and go up 2-0.

The Tornadoes looked to close things out in set three when it took a 10-3 lead. Talladega then pushed its lead to 17-4 before Stillman scored back-to-back points but an 8-1 run ended the set with the Tornadoes winning 25-7 and win the match.

Talladega as a team hit .458 while holding Stillman to a hitting percentage of .026. The Tornadoes tallied eight aces with Giovana Costarelli finishing with a team-high four aces to go along with her double-double with 23 assists and 12 digs.

Marcelly Perez paced Talladega with nine kills on 14 attacks while Re'na Ashley finished with seven kills and a team-high .778 hitting percentage.

Franchesca Rivas was third on the squad in kills with eight while recording four digs of her own.

Talladega is back in tomorrow night when it travels to Atlanta to face Clark Atlanta University at 5 p.m.
