TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team picked up its sixth win of the season with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-11) win over conference foe Oakwood University tonight. Talladega is now 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the HBCUAC while Oakwood falls to 2-5 and 1-1 on the season.
The Tornadoes wasted no time taking control of the opening set as they grabbed a 13-3 commanding lead. Oakwood was able to cut the lead to six and trail 14-8 but a Talladega 11-2 run closed out the set and gave the Tornadoes a 25-10 win.
Talladega opened set two with a 3-1 lead before pushing its lead to, 10-3. The Tornadoes then strung together a 9-4 run to push their lead to 19-7 before going on to win 25-8 and go up 2-0 in the match.
Going into set three, Talladega looked to close things out and it was on pace to do so when it grabbed a 12-3 lead. Oakwood attempted to chip away at the lead and was able to get within single digits and trail, 17-9. The Tornadoes closed the match out on an 8-2 run to win 25-11 and secure a 3-0 match victory.
Talladega for the match hit .461 while Oakwood hit -.103. The Tornadoes tallied 40 kills on 76 attempts.
As a team, Talladega tallied 11 aces with Stella Lukaszuk recording a team-high four. She also finished 10 digs.
Franchesca Rivas led all Talladega players with 11 kills while hitting .360 for the match. Teammate Josephine Gates finished with nine kills of her own.
Giovana Costarelli finished with 19 assists and six kills on the night while Nuria Santos tallied 15 assists and two aces.
Talladega's Briyith Echeverri recorded her sixth straight match with 10 or more digs as she registered 14 digs in tonight's contest.
The Tornadoes are back in action tomorrow when they travel to Albany State University for a non-conference match that starts at 5 p.m.
