Baseball Takes GCAC Doubleheader Against Tougaloo


TOUGALOO, Miss. – The Talladega College baseball team swept a conference doubleheader at Tougaloo College this afternoon. The Tornadoes took game one 7-0 and picked up an 11-1 win in game two. Talladega is now 21-14 and 9-2 in the GCAC while the Bulldogs are 8-27 and 4-8.

Talladega is back in action this weekend when it hosts GCAC rival College in a three-game series starting on Saturday at 2 p.m. and finishing up on Sunday with a doubleheader that is slated to start at noon.

Game 1: Talladega 7, Tougaloo 0 – 7innings
Talladega struck first as it plated two runs on two hits and an error to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.

The Tornadoes added to its lead in the top of the fourth when Armando Jackson and Jeriel Lamboy hit back-to-back home runs to push the lead to 4-0 before the inning ended.

Talladega broke the game open when it pushed a pair of runs across in the fifth and a run in the sixth to take a 7-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Samuel Guadamuz picked up the win to improve to 6-1. He allowed two hits over four innings while striking out 11. Reliever Dewinel Vazquez allowed one hit over three innings of work while fanning two.

Miguel Oropeza led the Tornadoes in hits as he went 3-for-4 with an RBI while teammate Isaac Guzman finished the day going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Game 2: Talladega 11, Tougaloo 1 – 7 innings
Headed into the top of the second tied at one, Talladega pushed four runs across on four hits to take a 5-1 lead. It started when Jaylen Mateo tripled to right field and later scored off of Allen Morel's sac fly to right. Jeriel Lamboy kept things going when he walked and later moved to second. He then scored when Jahir Cruz singled to center to make it, 3-1.  Cruz later stole second to move into scoring position. A ground out to second allowed Cruz to take third with two outs. Cruz then scored off of Darlin Fernandez's two-run home run over the left field wall to put Talladega in front 5-1 before the inning ended.

Both teams went scoreless for the next three innings but in the top of the sixth, the Tornadoes broke the game open when they pushed six runs across on six hits and an error to make it, 11-1.

The Talladega bullpen allowed three hits and two walks while striking out three over four innings of work.

Starting pitcher Nomar Caraballo picked up the win while allowing two hits and one run (earned) over innings.

Fernandez finished the game going 3-for-5 with three RBIs, three runs scored, two stolen bases, and two home runs for Talladega.

Oropeza was a perfect 3-for-3 while scoring a run and tallying a stolen base.
