TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College baseball team extended its winning streak to six games with a 10-9 non-conference win over Columbus State University at home afternoon. The Tornadoes are now 27-15 on the season while the Cougars drop to 27-17.
Talladega got on the board in the bottom of the first when four runs crossed on six hits. It started when
Victor Rivera doubled to left center. Following a ground out, Rivera stole third before scoring off
Miguel Oropeza's RBI double to right center to make it, 1-0. Oropeza crossed the plate when
Nomar Garcia's single to the gap in left-center. The merry-go-round continued when
Isaac Guzman got in on the action with an RBI double to left field, allowing Garcia to score from first to push the lead to 3-0. Talladega didn't let up as Guzman was able to score when
Jose Santiago singled to left to make it a 4-0 game before back-to-back outs ended the inning.
Both teams went scoreless for the next two innings, but in the top of the fourth, the Cougars plated three runs on three hits to cut the lead to one.
The Tornadoes responded in the bottom half of the fourth and matched Columbus State with three runs of their own to push their lead to, 7-3.
Talladega added another three runs in the bottom of the six to take a 10-3 lead but the Cougars fought their way back as they posted three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to trail, 10-9.
Columbus State was down to its final three outs in the top of the ninth when a fielding error allowed the tying run to reach first to lead off. Following a flyout, the next Cougar was plunked to put the go-ahead on first and send the tying run second, but back-to-back outs ended the threat.
Starting pitcher
Juan De Dios picked up his second win to move to 2-1 on the season. He allowed two walks in two innings of working while striking out three. Closer
Jack Wood earned his third save of the season while striking out one in an inning of work.
Guzman led the team with three hits to go 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. He was 1 of 5 players to tally multiple hits.
The one through three hitters (Rivera,
Darlin Fernandez, and Oropeza) in the Talladega lineup combined going 6-for-12 with six runs scored, three walks, two RBIs, three doubles, two triples, and three stolen bases.
Talladega back in action on Thursday, April 18 at 2 p.m. when it travels to face conference foe Oakwood University for a three-game series. Games two and three will be on Friday starting at noon.
