Softball Splits DH with Albany State

OXFORD, Ala. – The Talladega College softball team battled back after a game one loss and won the second matchup to split a doubleheader against the Albany State University Lady Rams Monday afternoon. ASU won the first game 11-2, but the Tornadoes earned victory in game two 10-8 in eight innings.


GAME 1 – Albany State 11, Talladega 2
 
Gabriele Garcia posted the first RBI of the day with a double to left center to knock in Monet Brown for a 1-0 lead.
 
The Lady Rams got busy in the third inning with three runs highlighted by a two-run homer from Keyatta Ayers.
 
Miranda Butler notched an RBI on a ground out to the pitcher to cut the lead to 3-2 to score Eliza Clay.
 
However, Albany State applied pressure starting in the fifth with two runs in the inning, two more runs in the sixth, and finally exploded for four runs in the seventh, highlighted by a three-RBI double from Romona McLeod who later scored to reach the 11-2 final score.
 
Brown made the most of her time on the basepaths by grabbing two stolen bases after being walked twice and scored a run. Rayna Davis and Garcia both collected doubles in one-hit efforts.
 
Butler pitched a complete game with three strikeouts, and allowed 18 hits, 10 earned runs, and three walks.
 
GAME 12 – Talladega 10, Albany State 9 (8 innings)
 
ASU struck first with an RBI single from Emaria Banks, but the lead was short lived as Garcia registered her second RBI on the day when Brown scored during the at-bat.
 
Scoring went quiet for an inning, but Albany State posted four runs in the third and added another in the fourth to take a commanding 6-1 advantage.
 
Talladega responded with nine unanswered runs starting in the fourth with an RBI-triple to plate Garcia followed by a single up the middle from Clay to bring Davis to cut the lead to 6-3.
 
The Tornadoes posted three more runs in the fifth with an RBI each from Garcia, Davis, and Clay to force a 6-6 tie. Dega then took the lead in the sixth with an RBI-single from Garcia, who later scored on an error. After Davis scored on a wild pitch, Talladega held a 9-6 advantage.
 
The Lady Rams struck back in the top of the seventh with three runs capped by a two-RBI single from Trista Murphy to tie the game at 9-9 and force an extra inning.
 
In the eight, Clay wrapped the game with an RBI-single up the middle for Davis to score and give the Tornadoes the 10-9 win over Albany State.
 
Garcia finished game two 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs and three runs scored. Davis turned in a 2-for-4 performance with four runs scored, two RBIs, a triple and a double. Clay went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Brown racked up three steals and three runs after going 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk. Haylee Clausell turned in a pair of hits and two stolen bases.
 
Ashli-Nicole Gutierrez pitched 7.1 innings with two strikeouts with 15 hits, eight earned runs and a walk allowed. Butler recorded the final two outs with two hits surrendered.
