Softball Falters in Doubleheader to Fort Valley State

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Talladega College softball team took some swings against NCAA Division II opponent Fort Valley State Wildcats and suffered two losses in the doubleheader Thursday afternoon. FVSU won the first matchup 8-0 in five innings and earned victory in game two 11-3 in five innings.
 
GAME 1 – Fort Valley State 8, Talladega 0
 
The Wildcats posted three runs in the first, highlighted by a home run by Mariah Williams to lead off the game on the way to a 3-0 after the first.
 
FVSU posted four runs in the fourth and added another run in the fifth on the way to an 8-0 win over the Tornadoes.
 
Haylee Clausell finished 1-for-3 with a stolen base., while Renita Smith drew a walk and stole a base with a 1-for-1 effort at the plate.
 
Miranda Butler worked 4.2 innings in the circle with 13 hits allowed and three earned runs surrendered.
 
GAME 2 – Fort Valley State 11, Talladega 3
 
Talladega came out hot in the first inning and started with Monet Brown stealing home. Eliza Clay singled for an RBI as Rayna Davis scored. Butler smashed a single to right field for an RBI and Clay scored to put the team up 3-0.
 
However, the Wildcats answered back with five runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 5-3 lead. FVSU poured on three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to force a run rule, 11-3 victory over the Tornadoes.
 
Davis posted a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with a double, a stolen base, and a run scored. Clausell racked up a pair of stolen bases.
 
Ashli-Nicole Gutierrez pitched 4.1 innings with a strikeout, and allowed 10 hits, seven earned runs and three walks.
 
Talladega College remains on the road for another NCAA Division II matchup against Albany (Ga.) State University on Friday starting at noon locally.
